In my many hubs, i have mentioned the use of curry masala (Garam masala in India). Some fellow hubbers cannot find it in their local market. So am i am sharing the way to make home made curry masala. There are many variations in this recipe. I am writing the simplest of them.

Yield 1 cup


  • Cumin seeds 4 tsp
  • Green cardamon 6
  • Dry ginger 1 tsp
  • Dry red chili 4
  • Nutmeg (use mace if it is not available) 2 tsp
  • Black pepper 1 tsp
  • Cinnamon stick 1
  • Bay leaves 4 dried
  • Coriander seeds 2 tsp or
  • Coriander powder 2 tsp
  • Black cardamon 2
  • Anise 4 whole star (optional)


  • Heat a non stick pan
  • Roast all the spices. Keep stirring.
  • When the spices start giving aroma, turn off the gas.
  • Grind the spices. You can grind them in coffee grinder or electric grinder.
  • Store it in an airtight container. It can be used till 2- 3 months.

      Hi dipsmi.

      Whem i was at home in England i used to go with my friends for a curry almost every weekend. Had Masala often and even tried Vindaloo once, but it was too hot for me.
