How come people are putting such small hubs up?

I do not normally hop , but decided to have a look.
I saw one advertising to make furniture out of recycled wood. advertising that they could make them.
with about 100 words and 1 picture.

The other one had two pictures with about 200 words.

Just thought they had to have 400 words except for poetry etc.

Perhaps it is a summer thing. I find myself tugged away from writing longer hubs due to so many other things going on...

Dobson, just bear in mind that shorter Hubs won't do much.  If you're finding you can't write a Hub that's a decent length, it's better not to write the Hub. Though your Hubs look like a reasonable length to me.

I think that hubpages systems only flag the hub if it's a short piece of text - pictures count as content too. However I usually flag short hubs...

But why? If the too short Hub isn't SPAM or Porn or whatever, and is well enough written, what harm does it do? It could even be a useful piece of information.
The only negative thing I've heard about short Hubs, is that they don't do well on Google, and therefore probably don't make money.
My short stories, which might have up to 4000 words, don't make any money either, so what's the difference?

There is a section of the flagging button (under low quality I believe) that says "Personal." That's what a lot of the 2-3 sentence hubs with a picture are from what I've seen.

I also assume yours are in the "creative writing" category, while many short hubs on the hopper are not.

I just took a look, but only find SPAM, Adult and Abuse ... maybe I'm looking in the wrong place. But I have read somewhere that Hubs shouldn't be personal.

Anyway, I don't see why a Hub should be flagged just because it is short.

My stories are under Entertainment, since they're not literary works in a way people might expect under the Creative Writing category.

When looking and determining a Hub I look at them from the view of 'cream rises, crap sinks' and vote with my clickity-clack accordingly.

  5. camlo profile image83

Okay. Very short is low quality ...
Do you know how short is TOO short? I've seen Hubs with about 50 to 100 words that were quite interesting.

Yup, have come across about 6 Hubs with one photo and less than 12 words on each. EVEN those 12 words had NOTHING to do with the title.....sheesh.

camloposted 13 years agoin reply to this

Well, that's different. Could a 12 word Hub even be considered a Hub, since Hubs should be Articles?

Kangaroo_Jaseposted 13 years agoin reply to this

I do not feel so, since these dozen words were somewhat of a personal note, rather than an article.

Well then, according to the rules, those Hubs should be flagged, and they can't add anything worthwhile to the site.

Flagging the hub based on their quality of contents and not based on their length makes some sense. WryLilt I hope you read them before you put a flag.

Hubs with 12 words! I suggest, HP shouldn’t allow publishing any hub with less than 50 words at least and some one should review the quality of hub which has 50-300 words.

I never know what to do with the short hubs. Someone from HP said if hubs with pics and a few sentences were in the "Photo Gallery," then they are okay.

If the few sentences are well written, I leave them alone. I figure the search engines will ignore them. But if they're spun junk or spammy, I flag them.

I wish we could have clearer guidelines from HP on this - especially since they want us to help them out and Hub Hop.

Something just occurred: When I'm writing a Hub (okay, haven't done it for some time), then click on save but not publish when it's not finished (it's been so long, I don't know what that button's actually called), I get a warning that says the Hub is too short and might be flagged. So, from this alone we should know how short is too short, and those who publish those 12 word Hubs must also know they're bound to be flagged.

Flagging a hub technically has NO effect on the hub status.

It is only a way to catch the attention of the staff.
    They make the decision.

After reading this forum I had another foray into hubhopping.  Now I know why I haven't done it for awhile.

So many short hubs with no photos or graphics of any kind.   I tried to read a few but they were very boring.  I gave up after looking at about a dozen.

I'm sure 50-100 words is not considered an acceptable hub, even if it's interesting. people use HP for backlinks also, maybe they think they can get away with what some other sites allow. here's what it says about substandard hubs.

Substandard simply means that the quality of the hub does not live up to HubPages standards. Below are some common reasons that a hub may be moderated as substandard:

        * "Test" or otherwise unfinished hubs
        * Very little content
        * Unoriginal or purely personal content
        * Contributes nothing new in a heavily saturated topic
        * Many broken links or links to low quality sites
        * Links with deceptive or inaccurate link text
        * Missing videos
        * Use of photos that are heavily pixelated or contain prominent watermarks

It would be nice to see more clarification on "very little content" and "purely personal content".  I've seen plenty of hubs with purely personal content. how personal, what does this mean? hmm

    1. livelonger profile image86
livelongerposted 13 years agoin reply to this

I would say personal that has value/interest to someone who doesn't know you is still very much acceptable. I've read "useful" personal accounts on hubs that were excellent reads, still very insightful and meaningful even though I don't know the Hubber.

I think the substandard stuff is the kind of personal blog-like hub that just has a rundown of their day ("I fed the dog this morning, and watched some TV. Then I went to go pick up the kids and take them to swim practice"...) that is absolutely meaningless unless you already know the person. This is the stuff that should be on a personal blog and not on HubPages. smile

I tend to flag Hubs based on their quality not their length.

If they're spammy, just flag them.
