I spent most of yesterday working on my wife's laptop with no success.
She has a Compac Presario running Vista, and we use a Belkin wireless router coupled with a wireless modem via a lan cable for internet. She can't get on the internet or the network to my desktop.
Her wireless setup will show she's connected to the Belkin, then a few moments later she's limited connected, then she's not connected. Then she's connected to a low strength, no security wireless from somewhere, then she's not and it starts all over.
We cannot seem to get her to connect to the modem at all - it doesn't like the password stamped on the back of the modem, although she's used it in the past.
The only indication of something wrong is that the compac reports there is a problem with duplicate IP addresses (invalid IP address, probably a duplicate).
Any suggestions? Especially the part about the "foreign" wireless signal has me totally baffled - there are a half dozen other signals present - why pick that particular, low strength one to connect to, when there are 2 others (belkin and modem) listed higher on the list with higher strength signal?
Sorry for the length of post - trying to give all the info I can. Any suggestions would sure be appreciated!
*edit* - I forgot - she's using Vista
Hi, there is a few ways of dealing with this problem
1st/
I reccomend that you use the system restore tool and restore the computer to a few days ago whenever you did not have that issue. None of your documents will be affected by this.
If that does not solve the problem then go into device manager
(right click "my computer" then click the "manage" option and select device manager. Once in device manager beware of anything with a yellow sign beside it if there is any this means the device is not working.
double click the network adaptor panel so that you can right click the ethernet adaptor to get to the properties screen. Once at the properties screen then double click the option "INTERNET protocol version 4 and 6 seperatly and ensure that all settings are set to "obtain automatically".
Try this if not joy add another post and ill take you further
thanks

Sorry folks, my wife was looking for help while I was at work. I apologize for the above post.
Yes - it did not work. Somewhere along the line I found a corrupted file (not sure what it was), but am trying to set up the network again on her computer. It keeps telling us that both she and I have the same IP address, so maybe getting the information for network (through the network wizard on my windows XP) will help.
Just going to your network adapter disable/enable will reset your dns and correct the issue of duplicate ips
Takes 30 seconds
or
start --> control panel --> view network connections--> repair
Thanks, sunforged, by while my computer, running XP has that option, hers, running Vista, does not appear to. At least we can't find the "repair" part of it. All the other options I have are available, but not that one.
This sounds like the right thing to do, though. Anyone know Vista?
Just start -> search "network adapter"
then disable/enable or repair
Yeah - Vista apparently resets by by disabling and then enabling. Didn't work, though, and we still haven't found any "repair" option. We'll keep looking.
Didnt work as in your still getting a duplicate ip error?
Have you power cycled your system?
modem-router-pcs?
http://www.ehow.com/how_4904127_power-c … outer.html
If I right click the network symbol in the lower right opposite the start menu it gives me a diagnose/repair option?
Well, that was the option you said, but all it gives is the option to input security key, which does no good. Thanks, though.
I've got to go to work - will try some more tomorrow morning. Thanks to all for your help.
