I have wondered about this too...

What I have observed though is that people who comment get accolades on their profile recognizing their engagement in hub activity.

What I do not know is whether it is strategy, interest, a mixture or otherwise?

There are two different aspects to HubPages - community and commercial.

One is the community aspect, where Hubbers can interact and support each other.  That's the main purpose of commenting on other Hubs - it gets you noticed by other Hubbers, it encourages them to come and comment on your Hubs and become a follower, etc.  You do get an internal link but that's a bonus.

Your paying audience are not Hubbers, they're the people who arrive via the search engines.  They're not going to care about your comments.

Not entirely true.. There is some evidence to suggest that Google  incorporate within its algorithm a measure of how long people remain on your page and also if they comment or not. This can obviously help both internal and external traffic factors but also, if you are in a service type business and you're seen to engage and respond to comments in an honest and knowledgable way then comments on your hubs and the answers to them can also really help your business.

If you are just going to write "nice hub" then more, but if you are commenting insightful comments based on what teh person wrote (showing you actually read their work) people are going to be more apt to read your stuff. I never click on someone's profile if they just write, "Nice hub" or "Very Interesting." But if someone writes a lengthy response, it makes me curious at their topics. I almost always go to their profile, and scan their topics, if something interests me, I read it, if it was good I look at others of theirs. So yes, commenting can work, but you have to actually mean what you write, not a generic response.

I think you'll find that every time you leave a comment on a hub you gain a backlink. Its in internal backlink which is not quite so powerful as an external backlink...but hey a backlink is a backlink and all good.

This is a very good reason to add comments to others hubs!  At first, these comments may well be your only backlinks.

safe to say, genuine community participation will help your rank in google over time (for all your hubs because they are all linked to your profile) and will definitely help your standing in the community
