I'm rather partial to John Cusack and Leonardo Dicaprio....although I don't know that I'd say they're the best "of all time".  They represent my generation well.

Leonardo Dicaprio is a very talented actor and is getting better with age like a fine wine which is maturing.

I think that Johnny Depp is an amazing actor.  I hate when he picks similar roles because I don't think people get to appreciate his talent or see just how good he is.  If you look back you can see that he can play anything.

it really depends on what era and what country we're talking about when it comes to acting.

if we're talking about the united states specifically, then it would depend on what era we're talking about here.  if we were to take this all the way back to the era of silent films, then it would be vastly different considering many actors/actresses lost their jobs when talkie films came out, as many had horrendous voices.

however, if we're going to talk about which actors were good after that period of movie history, then it's still tough to gage because many actors and actresses possess fine qualities that it's hard to judge.  some could say charleton heston as being the best actor of all time, and they'd have plenty of facts to support their argument.  however, if you honestly broke down the personality types of all his characters, they all came off fundamentally the same. all of heston's characters possessed the same stoic voice and calm reserved demeanor; this is why I'll always go on record to say that actors like Will Smith (don't laugh as this is true) is a better actor because the man is a freaking chameleon in every role he plays.  even in his bad movies, he still carries each role with his charisma and wit.

then again, heston has starred in movie roles that not only remain as some of Hollywood's all time greatest films, he's starred in films that possessed many memorable scenes.  Something you can't say about Will Smith's movies, as most of his films don't have too many memorable scenes, nor were any of them ever deemed worthy enough to be put up there in the quality of Heston's films.  That's not to say that Will stars in bad movies, as there's a lot of films you can turn to that were great under Will Smith.  Just not as many as Heston.  Like I said, it's hard to gage which actors and actresses are the best, as there's so many factors to consider.

First of all, what are the criterias?  are we basing this solely on acting ability alone?  as in a actor/actress' ability to actually conform and transform into any role they play?  Or are we basing it off how many memorable movies that they've played in?  Are we basing this off how much money these actors have accumulated over the years?  Are awards a factor as well?  I think the important thing here is to establish exactly what you think makes an actor a great actor first, then go from there, as there's too many variables to decide if you ask me.

A difficult question to answer.  Time and space have different people at different times. One constant good actor, I think, is Al pacino. There are scores of others , though
