American or Japanese animation???

   I prefer japanese animation I think the art itself is much more appealing and I love the slice of life stuff.
   Whats? your opinion?

      The Japanese are miles ahead in the techniques and content of their cartoons - the Koreans are miles ahead in movie making and the camera work in their movies.  If either country started to put out English spoken movies and content aimed at us then they would make Disney and the others look like the barely competent christian bigots that most of them are.  Of course they would have to break into the US trade monopoly that is the movie business.

            I don't watch anything much to be honest - just what my students show me from time to time and the odd Korean movie my friend gives me when he is finished with it.  I just know the camera work is excellent, especially and the scene setting - and the Jap cartoons have depth and class and are exceptionally well made

      I think it depends but I can see that Japanese animators seem bolder and more imaginative, and the Japanese artist cares about the craft of animation a lot more, I think. It's really a country of people with pride in their work, you can see that reflected in their quality animation.

   definitely japanime all the way.  no offense to american animation, but it seems that anime not only has much deeper story content within their cartoons, they're also not limited to the audience they can appeal to.  take alleged adult cartoons for instance, many american cartoons that are allegedly geared towards adult are often prone to have sexual related material and/or a lot of violence involving blood.  Whereas anime, they can easily appeal to an adult audience with a graphic and strong story arc, without resorting to using sexual based material and/or violence.  Don't get me wrong, there are some animes out there that do have suggestive sexual references and/or violent content as well, but they don't have to use it borderline obsessively like american adult related cartoon shows have to.  Something that many american animators fail to generate.  don't get me wrong, the closest we've had that i would recommend would be Justice League or Justice League Unlimited, as those were deep cartoons.  However, they still pale in comparison to other animes like "ghost in the shell:  stand alone complex" and others, so there's hardly any comparison.
   
   Plus, it seems like most western animators today kind of adopted max fleischer's method when he made those old "superman" cartoons, which is "less means more." meaning that the less detail you put into the animation, it equals more!  whereas anime, it seems they add a lot more detail in not only the animation itself, but the characters reactions as well.

   Japanese. I am mad about Studio Ghibli films. Howl's Moving Castle, Porco Rosso, Spirtited Away, Kiki's Delivery Service, and the rest are just brilliant.

   Definitely Asian animation, particularly anime--superior technique, story and variety.
   
   Asian animators, on the whole, rarely dumb it down or hold the limiting view that cartoons and animation are only meant for children. You have romantic comedy, tragedy, and deeply philosophical stories existing side by side with slapstick and silliness--not so with American animation.
   
   Though Pixar really has done a lot to revolutionize animation in the West, it seems like we're still suffering from this patronizing and limiting attitude.
   
   (Miyazaki is also a great favorite of mine)

   Definitely Japanese animation. Anime has better stories involved that keeps your interest. Not all of them do though. I like things like Naruto, .Hack and some other that are pretty story based, but then I also love the shows like Lucky Star and Azumanga Daioh. I just find the new American cartoons to be completely terrible.

   when i look back at the time where i used to watch American cartoons (X-men, batman etc.) i like them! and i used to laugh at power puff girls and my fave dexter lab. then again the art design of american cartoon still remains as it is and i cant see any improvements to it. although they step into 3r era which i find entertaining and well, the art is competitive to others but comparing to Japanese animation or what we commonly call as Anime, american animation is way behind to its design. As i watch both japanese and american animation in 2d or 3d, japan leads its way to the top!
   
   As you can see of their Final Fantasy movies, its really close to "real" human forms and moves! americans can do it but the character design always refers to novelty or fantasy type, whereas in japanese animation most of their works focus on reality (humans and their lives).
   
   The japanses animation always catches the realistic emotion of humans since, you can see to their series a part of your life happenings. American animation also touches our heart in other ways. i have to admit that many of american animation touches me but yeah, still they always refer to fantasy and not in reality.

    Anime all the way, there are a few good american cartoons but there are mostly comedy tv series. Anime has better graphics and sometimes the background looks so like real life. They usually have better story lines too. Most anime's come from manga's which in there own right are better than american comics. I highly recommend Lucky Star, The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya,Gakuen Alice and all the work from Kyoto Animations and Studio Ghilbi.Ganbatte!

    Japanese is much better and more artful. Beautiful to witness to while American animation is still primarily just geared towards children while Japanese cover the entire family I'd say.

    I guess Anime is one of those things I just don't get.
    The guys look like girls.
    The tentacle obsession thing (shudder)
    The "sexy" female characters look like they are about ten years old.
    "Cute" characters. I'd like to drop kick Pikachu through the uprights.
    The heroes seem to brood a whole lot. (Maybe "Twilight The Anime" would work)
    Why do all the people in Japanese animation look Caucasian?
    The huge eyes.
    The gasping for breath as a reaction to everything.
    Chibi anything (shudders again)
    
    It's personal opinion but I'll take Justice League, Justice League Unlimited, The Avengers: Earth's Mightiest Heroes or Young Justice over anything anime.
    
    I have tried to like anime.
    I've watched the first Dragonball Z, Dirty Pair, Project AKO, Hellsing, Macross and I really tried to watch Akira, Ghost in the Shell, Vampire Hunter D, Neon Genesis Evangelion, but just couldn't get interested.

       It sounds like all the anime you've watched are in the shonen and seinen genre (i.e. geared towards boys and men respectively), sabreblade. And the tentacles are only in hentai, which is porn.
       
       But you're right about the guys looking like girls and the gasping and the huge eyes and the chibi. There's also the "wind effect" where wind blows just at the right moment every time to symbolize anything from surge of power to awkwardness, the "harem" where many girls like the same boy and the "reverse harem" where many boys like the same girl, the "fan service" which I personally don't care for but laugh off anyway, and a multitude of other anime quirks.
       
       But at the end of it all, I'd watch Japanese anime over American cartoons anytime.

             If you like light romance comedies/dramas (which generally fall under the shojo genre, i.e. for young girls), try Kimi ni Todoke, Lovely Complex, Kaichou wa Maid-sama!, Ouran High School Host Club, Saiunkoku Monogatari, or Toradora!
             
             If you like the more mature or serious slice of life stories (which generally fall under the josei genre, i.e. for adult females), try Honey and Clover, Nodame Cantabile, or Rumbling Hearts. I should warn you though that Rumbling Hearts is more than a little depressing. Hehe.
             
             Also, although they are in the shonen/seinen genre, I would also suggest Death Note, Code Geass: Lelouch of the Rebellion, Eden of the East, Great Teacher Onizuka, and Wolf's Rain.
             
             You may have different preferences, but most of the above-mentioned are my personal favorites.

Instead he emerges from his bat cave at will only to make some snide comment and to "mimic" what he sees as a lack of dialogue and movement. Now I simply respond with, "Anime provides and promotes critical thinking and inquiry."

    Japanese, of course. Hayao Miyazaki is the King, and everything coming out of Studio Ghibli is gold. My all-time favourite is My Neighbour Totoro. I can watch it over and over again.

       For the reference (Refering to an earlier post on miyazaki and disney) Disney IS the liscenced distributor in North America for Miyazaki and Studio Ghible in North America. And yes, Totoro is awesome!
       
       Personally, my favorite anime movie is Darkside Blues.

    And besides, I haven't known any american anime? like Snow white and the kyuubi type...
    
    However, Americans were the best when it comes to creating Academy award winning cartoons eh..

       "I haven't known any american anime?" That's because an American produced show cannot legally call itself anime for marketing purposes. Avatar: The Last Airbender apparently got sued and lost here. It's a trademark that can only be used to refer to Japanese cartoons.
       However, there is a lot of U.S. animation, from Ben 10 to the Last Unicorn, that have anime-style art. Also, the Academy Awards are in the U.S. A movie that makes it big in Japan will undoubtedly win lots of their awards. I would say critical acclaim and box office records for animated films is either equal between the countries or slightly in favor of Japan.

    American animation is actually of higher quality than Japanese... What people don't realize is that american animation uses higher frames per second to get smoother animation. Japanese use a lower frame rate, not to mention a lot of stills, pans, and recycled footage. Don't get me wrong, anime is really well drawn and they pay special attention to details such as lighting and camera angles, but quality wise american is definitely higher. Anime is on a much lower budget than most american animation.

    As far as the contents' concerned, Japanese animation reveals violence and sexual scenes; as far as the pictures' concerned, Japanese animation is less dynamic and less creative. Disney pictures are the best!
