If money is not the issue, why do you work?

   Most people work throughout life in order to earn money. Even those who have plenty of money still work to earn more. If money is not a problem, will you still work? If so why?

   I work to pay the bills, but if I didn't have to work I'd probably get really bored anyway, so I'd have to find something to do.

      I agree Hollie, when we are used to working all our life and then suddenly we are jobless for some reasons, even if we have money more than enough to pay the bills, we still would find something to do otherwise we get sick...sick of boredom. This is what is happening to me now.

         I think if I was in that position I'd embark on some form of charity work. Are there any particular charities you are interested in, that you might like to get involved with?

            There is no charity in my area. I would have joined some voluntary work if there is any.

   I wouldn't work if I didn't have to, but I'll always write (and if I ever don't need to work and write just because I enjoy writing, or because I think I have something worth sharing, I'd probably still generally expect to be paid for it - and yet not be above writing for nothing either if that seemed like the thing to do for one reason or another).
   
   Having said that, I don't have a boredom problem when I'm not working.  To me, the biggest problem with not working can be feeling removed from "the world" more than I prefer, but that can be dealt with.   There are ways to do things that feel worthwhile and/or interesting without being at a 9 to 5 job.  In fact, I think the 9 to 5 robs a lot of people of being able to do some of the more interesting and worthwhile things that they'd otherwise do. To me, unless someone is either saving lives or curing horrible diseases, it's really not great to hang one's "identity and fulfillment hat" on any job or career (or marriage or on being a stay-at-home mom).  Life and lifestyles change.  People need to "be a whole person first" if they're not to be knocked for a loop "identity-/fulfillment-wise" when changes happen.

      Here it's 8 to 5, and I was used to doing it. Lisa is right, I am writing because I enjoy doing it; I do some painting too or other creative things like art. Perhaps I just miss the camaraderie in school; the laughter of students and colleagues. Actually it's not boredom like I don't know what to do; it's the boredom of missing the familiar life.

         I get you. Working from home can be a very solitary existence, but I think over time you adapt and, as  Lisa says, find ways around it. The forums are also great for that I think because as well as communicating with others, even if only in writing, your communicating with people who are often in similar situations.

            You are right Hollie, this is the reason why I value hubpages. I love it here, truly. There is no other site that can compare so far, as far as my surfing is concerned. Here I can express my opinion freely and also listen from what people are saying. I love reading the hubs;there is variety here and most important, it's much safer here...(that is; from scammers)

                  I understand that. I had been doing that for the past 30 years especially when my children still needed me. It's not that I won't work to earn anymore, I think that I would in fact love to work again; there is just something I am working on now for the major change of my situation and location and the waiting time leaves me idol. I am just caught in the middle.
