How do you feel about spanking your child? Do you think you should do this? If so, do you feel that you should spank your child while you are angry?

Actually, I have no strong opinion either way on this.

Para, have you noticed that the two of us have a gift for turning any serious thread into a complete joke?

And we picked the wrong thread to do it...

Darn it, this thread was NOT what I was looking for when I googled "spanking chicken."

So as not to derail completely, para's image kind of sums it up. Young children occasionally need negative reinforcement and it needs to be immediate, quick, and memorable so they connect the punishment with the behavior that brought it about. It should be mild and sparingly used, but it should be used.

May I borrow your glasses, Eric? I was at the beach today, and there was this guy jogging, and I heard him calling (pssst) and I turned around. I thought he was my neighbor and waved at him, turned around and kept on reading my book. And then, the guy made a U-turn and came over to talk to me, introduced himself, and I was like - "I don't know you!" and my husband arrived at that point. I think he's skipping work tomorrow, to take me to the eye doctor. How embarrasing is that?!

They'll only help if you're like a -14. My lenses are so powerful I can laser exfoliate my face just by turning my head toward the sun and wiggling it around a bit.

Is that some kind of superpower? big_smile Loved your hub on forum arguments. Hub of the Day - the least they could do. It's a great article. You're kind of funny, you know? tongue

            Thank you. smile

I guess it's a superpower like Cyclops if his eye beams traveled in the opposite direction, vaporizing his brain and burning a giant hole in the back of his head. Actually, no, that's a terrible analogy. It's more like I'm just blind.

Back on topic, I just reread the thread title and I've changed my stance. I am virulently opposed to children who spank. I don't think kids should be doing that at such a young age.

    Courtney-

This has been a big topic here on Hubpages.  Simply put, spanking is violence.  Do you want to teach that violence is a way to solve problems?  Do you want you child running and cowering in fear from you?

Angry or calm spanking is not an acceptable way to discipline a child.

A calm, quiet two-way discussion discussing the behavior and the expectations is where consistent discipling begins.  Not a physical beating.

The child-beaters handbook always begins with, "He is MY child..." as though the child is some sort of property without any rights or feelings.   Then, "He needs to learn who is the boss."  There should not be a competition or battle for power between parent and child, but a nurturing and learning relationship.

If you own a child then I can't see why you shouldn't do what you like with it. No point in waiting until they get too big to hit.

I don't believe in spanking children, but I don't see anything wrong with it, unless it turns into a sever beating, which is something different from a few well placed smacks on the bottom.

My mother spanked me all the time and I still loved her. The nuns in grade school spanked me too, and guess what, it didn't turn me into a serial killer.

I never spanked my daughters. I always tried to use their bad behaviors to teach them something.
