Football; Soccer or Basketball!? Which is the better Sport!?

   Two of the largest Sports in the World today!!
   
   Which would you say is the better Sport!?
   
   Personally i could happily watch Football and never get bored, i think it is the best Sport in the World and involves a lot more Skill and technique than Basketball and other sports in the World today!!
   
   I used to think Michael Jordan was really impressive, but have recently changed my mind after watching some of the performances in the world today by David Beckham, Zinedine Zidane, Cristiano Ronaldo, Wayne rooney & Steven Gerrard!!
   
   I just think Basketball can get a bit repetetive now and again and i get bored easily when watching and playing it!!

      I am suprised that no one has noted that of the three sports, football(American) is the only spoert listed that requires the most team effort.  No offense meant to any of the other fans, but I feel the other two can be won or lost by a single player. Take basketball and the Cleveland Cavaliers for example, Lebron James essentially carried the team top the playoffs. Soccer you have names like Renoldo(pardon the spelling of the names, I do not know many soccer players, Bekham, and etc... The same fundamental things are at work here as well.  If you have the one guy playing at his best, you have the game. If not, doom and gloom.  For football, all 11 players must play well to win.  There are so many things that have to be done on any given play/formation, if one guy is out of position, you can lose. It relies on all players not just the star.  I will cede the point that some teams are only aone man show, but those are few and far between in the winners circle.

         You may be surprised but football English, can not be won with just one player, it can be lost by one player by means of a red card, (sending off). Football requires a full team effort, just like all team sports. Also who thinks Ronaldo was a good thing, He thinks he knows best and does not listen to the manager, for this reason i believe we lost the European cup to Ronaldos future club Barcelona because he did not play within the team as part of the team, I say great ball control does not make a team player, and I wish Barcelona the best of luck with their current investment of £80Million.

      Well as a Brit, I don't know too much about American Footie, but it looks pretty fun, so I might try watching some on Sky next time I'm at a house with it xD
      
      Basketball is fun to play, as is football(soccer to you ) But I prefer to watch a game of football(soccer) to basketball
      
      Just me though. Beauty of it is, we can all choose
      
      I'm also a cricket fan, just to throw another sport into the mixer

   Basketball, it is so much quicker with more explosion and intensity. I don't think you can say soccer takes more skill than basketball either, but you also can't say basketball takes more skill than soccer

   Basketball is easier to follow than football, although I enjoy watching them both equally.  If I'm watching one on tv, and a game is particularly close, my friends and family know to get themselves and any random furniture out of the way because it can get pretty intense.  Watching one live--nothing makes for a better night out!!

   Definately football.  But then guess I am partly biased in that I come from England where football is the national sport and basketball defiantely won't even make it into the top 5 sports in terms of popularity.

         Sorry - I made the same mistake as Bristol Boy - it is late here! I meant soccer, in American, and it is a sport of grace and subtlety.
         
         Mind you, when I played, I was the big, ugly lump that specialised in kicking people

   I would have to say Soccer, hands down. I think soccer definitely requires more skill than the other two. You use more of your body. Especially those that can juggle the ball - you can't do that with a football.

      Many people can juggle a football.  I remember people juggling the ball at Wembley and Mill Stad in Cardiff.  Also I think of Paul Gascoigne, Ryan Giggs, Christiano Ronaldo and even David Beckham have juggled balls in matches.

       Yeah that is a good point.  I read somewhere that the vast majority of the planet calls football (the original association football) football, or a local derivative. 
       
       This is shown by the map below for English speaking countries.
       
       
       
       Also in many other languages the term fooball or a local equivalent is used, for example le football in Francophone countries, futbol in Spanish speaking ones, Fußball in German speaking countries, 足球 in China (足 = foot and 球 = ball)etc etc. 
       
       It is only countries such as America, Australia and Ireland where there is a dominant local sport that is called football that the term association football (often shortened to just soccer) is used.  However, even in these areas the meaning for the world football is slowly becoming to mean the sport using a round ball (largely due to immigrant populations and the fact that football is by far the most popular sport worldwide and in an increasingly globalised world new names are needed).

             That is a very good point!  And also I have always found it quite weird when rugby, American Football etc call their sports football when the ball spends much more times in the hands, but then maybe that is just me.

                The Irish call soccer football too - they tend to call their version Gaelic Football, to distinguish it.

       I like ARF - Every couple of years, Australia play Ireland in a hybrid of ARF and Gaelic Football. There is a brawl every five minutes!

             Aussie Rules is much faster moving - Gaelic Football is much better to play than watch. Don't know if you have watched Hurling, but it is a great sport!

    Futbol is the only pure sport left. None of this instant replay, challenge crap that we have to sit and deal with every single game.
    
    Soccer leaves it up to the objectivity of the referees. Sometimes they make mistakes but that is the beauty of the game. You can't count on getting calls to win a game. It all comes down to putting the ball in the back of the net.
    
    Talk about a graceful and perfectly crafted sport. Nothing can compare.

    Soccer or football, which ever you prefer to call it, is much more interesting in my view.  Basketball, at least the NBA version is simply a glorified 1v1 game.  Soccer combines an artistry of movement that basketball can not duplicate.

          Taking in a baseball game is great. Everyone at a baseball game knows it has a unique, particular pace. It's a laid-back event for the most part. No illusions about it. You eat a hotdog, have some beers, shoot the shit and get excited just when something exciting happens. You think about the game and enjoy the experience. No one has to stab each other or burn down the stadium in an effort at creating excitement that's not there. Watching a bunch of guys jog back and forth for two hours, score maybe once if you're lucky, and exchange colored cards while pretending it's the most exciting thing you've ever seen is just ridiculous.

    No brainer -- basketball (other than the fact that it's a Canadian invention, is fast paced with quick turn arounds)!  Love to watch and play it.  Then soccer (yeah, the North American version) and football (the coned ball) least.  Can't understand why men like to pat each others' butts....

    I'm with the Guru!  Heck, if really want violence, go and watch UFC.  There's a reason why some of those guys have those cauliflower ears and have less teeth than my baby nephew!  No, but football is the ULTIMATE team sport.  If just one guys misses an assignment, the entire PLAY won't work.

    American Football is the best game to play and to watch.I became fan of the game after viewing the 2008 superbowl Giants vs. Patriots its was a really good game and it came down the the wire. it makes the game even better because the ending was unexpected.

    The answer to your question of course is arbitrary--based on ones specific taste in sports. Certain sports are more popular in certain Countries. Had you included a specific Country such as the US, then this could be narrowed down to football, basketball, baseball and hockey, then you can address which one is better or more popular. In another Country it could be soccer, rugby, etc.

    Being from Bedford, England, UK we dont get a lot of basketball or American football aired on our TV which is a real shame because they are great sports to watch.
    But I personally would chose football all the time, grown up following it from such an early age, I am a avid Chelsea fan and have been through the good times and the bad times with them but still love it, just the same as England I watch every game but never set my exceptions too high as we normally get knocked out but if we get far in competitions I get so excited. I hope before my time is up I get to see them win the world cup but I have been saying that for years and still waiting.
