Can anyone help me understand why my daily page views have dropped from 400 per day to 25 per day in the last month. During this drop I have added 10 hubs which in the past would have increased my daily page views. I am thinking of deleting hubs and rewriting them. Before this drop I had three hubs on the first page of google search and two of them were number 1.Have I somehow annoyed Google. I'm at a lose and don't know how to respond. Any ideas please.

I'm in the same boat. Many are. Many were not affected by google negatively though. I went from hundreds of views a day to under 10. I could fiddle with my title but then they won't match the URL and I'm not sure whether that makes things worse. It's pretty demotivating. There are lots of forum threads on similar topics. None have definite answers but most have great advice. Worth a read if you can find them. If you find the answer shout it out as I'll be waiting too.

With all the recent changes going on with "the" search engine Google, one will find this happening. I have tweaked here and there, sometimes it helps, other times it is an apparent waste of time.  I don't just have to do it here on HP, but I have several websites up. On the websites it becomes a major chore as I have well over 5,000 pages online.

This is a major issue because it does involve income. What I am finding however, that pretty much nowadays to compete online with the Google updates happening pretty often, you would have to give up your day job and tweak full time to please Google. I can't do that, so I do what I can and have actually seen some article and web pages pull back up in ranking and views.

So true, and although it hurts our income, I've come to the conclusion it will be a good thing for everyone - if Google finally gets it right, which it hasn't yet.

        *Warning, rant ahead*

Google has said it's trying to give preference to "authority sites".  Some people see a conspiracy here to favour the big corporates, but I can see the point of "authority sites".

For instance, one of my (formerly) best performing articles was on how to volumize hair.  I'm not a hairdresser, or a trichologist, or anyone whose career involves working with hair - I'm just an average fifty-something woman who's struggled with her own fine hair.  Pre-internet, I'd have been content to bore my daughters and grand-daughters (if I had any) or friends with my hair tips.  But for the last three years, I've been at or near the top of the search engines, beating advice from real hairdressers.  And getting questions about other aspects of hair, which I'm not qualified to answer - so is that really helping people?

If I look at my account, I also have Hubs which I created by researching information which is already on the internet and presenting it in a different way. The sites where I got the information are now ranking above mine - but isn't that as it should be?  They've got the expertise, I'm just a writer.

I know there has always been a market for writers to write articles from researching the work of others - but that was in magazines, which used to be ephemeral things, published one week and pulped the next.  Those articles had value as a "good read" but they didn't expect to compete with the original sources.  If we research on the internet and then expect our articles to rank high and make money, we need to outrank our sources - is that fair?

All in all, I think we've been lucky to have been writing at a time, and on a site, where our stuff would be read.  Google is moving to give preference to authority sites - right now they're doing it imperfectly, but they'll go on tweaking the algo in an attempt to get it right. So more grief is to come.

Absolutely. When I write an article -- and I've written roughly 2,000 articles for clients plus all of my own stuff -- I either write from what I know or what I'm "expert" in, or I research. I never, ever, ever use just one source when researching, which often results in a more comprehensive piece.

I also see no problem with your article on hair care ranking above the professionals. We all want to hear about and learn from others' experiences. That's why there are so many successful forums and stuff dedicated to parenting, travel, etc.

Now, if you're just reading a Wikipedia article and rehashing it, well yeah. Then I would have to agree with you.

I'm also going to go back to my brand marketing days here. If I created a new line of, I dunno, cashmere socks for dogs and they were a hit with consumers, you can bet your bippy that there would be tons of people out there creating their own line of cashmere dog socks. Would that be a problem?

I guess I just don't like Google telling me I can't write about George Washington just because Wikipedia already has a page on him. smile

IT sounds like you were affected by the latest Panda or Penguin.
There are numerous articles online about trying to recover from Penguin.
This link has info and insight that may help. Check the forums in Need Help and HubPage Tutorials and Community for threads on the subject.

There was mention of another update being rolled out - just wasn't sure of the date. I think it's something we all have to just wait out sad traffic may be down this algorithm round but the next one may bring it back. For now, I'd suggest just keep writing and promoting. Also, it could be that one of those other site's may have got dinged. We're all here along for a ride. hmm sounds corny huh?

Marisa, I think sharing personal experiences is best. Professionals have to watch what they say to protect their jobs and both personal and business rep's tongue whereas, ordinary people can be far more honest smile
