   For me, it was Cortex. A friend of mine ran a short campaign in the Serenity (firefly) 'verse and it was a blast!

      Currently, in Chicago I am playing D&D 3.0. Previous to that I was working on a Dark Heresy campaign.

      I'm playing in two different father & son D&D campaigns. One is 2nd edition, one is 3.5. I also write stuff for Call of Cthulhu, but haven't played in a few years.

   We picked up all the D&D 4.0 stuff, decided to try it since it had been a long time since we played 3.0.  TBH I'm not in love with all the new stuff. They've basically turned it into a mechanism to sell more stuff, more books (wayyyyyyy more books), more gadgets and more figures (since their figures game flopped too... now they have to figure out how to sell all that plastic crap from China--they aren't even good metal figures like Ral Partha or Reaper Minis). 
   
   They sold the rights to 3.0 to Pathfinder, and as far as I'm concerned, that's where D&D lives now.  This new thing using D&D's label is just another example of a company driving a brand into the ground by focusing on profits before product.

      Very nice. Yeah, I gave 4.0 a try too, and afterward I remember sitting back and thinking: Man, why didn't I just spend those four hours playing World of Warcraft? It would have been more satisfying.

   City of Hero's / City of Villians was the last RPG game that I played.  Great game and lots to do. Met some great people. It's easier sometime though not to get to wrapped up in playing because you'll be on for hours. The creators have bought the game a long way since it started abd there seems to be a lot of additions to the game as of late.

   In 1977, a million years ago to most modern RPG players today, I was part of a nerdy little group that met in a library public access room once a week to play the original Dungeons and Dragons.  I lasted about a month.

      Ha, me too.  I played in a public library in the late 70's.  WOuldn't it be funny if you were one of those guys I played with?  I actually still have my original books, some of the dice, and ONE lead figuring (lol, yes, lead).

   I've never played an RPG, but always wanted to try. It seems like something that would be really fun, especially since I've always had so much fun worldbuilding.
   
   Some of my friends at college did a weekly vampire LARP, but I was always too shy to try. I'm not much of an actress and figure I'd probably be better off with tabletop or online games.
   
   I do fiddle around with Interactive Fiction occasionally, but not as often as I'd like.

      My family, and it is so very much larger than the average family, once wrote a book chapter by chapter, each of us writing only one chapter until the very end.  I had the privilege of writing the final two chapters and sewing up the story lines.  It was great fun.  Not RPG but creative and fun none the less.

      You just need the RIGHT DM/GM (dungeon master/game master) to run the group.  A good DM is like a good party host, the kind of person who possesses all the right skills to make everyone comfortable, radiates a sense of control that makes all players feel safe (like a good theater class teacher).  The right DM makes all the difference, especially for new players, by encouraging them to act without pushing, allowing them not to sit back and watch without penalizing them, and making sure their initial attempts are rewarding.  It really is a social experience FIRST, then a game.

    Last RPG I played used the GURPS ruleset.
    
    It was in a campaign that's been running, off and on, since 1990. It's not easy to get together with these folks, as some of us now live in different states, so we only get together about once a quarter anymore, and sometimes some of us skype in.
    
    In fact, I'm about to get together with that group again in about a week, and I'm very much looking forward to it. At this point, the game (while one of the best games I've ever played in) is pretty much secondary, and the getting together with my old friends is the important bit.

    The last RPGs I played were before I moved over to the US from the UK. I was playing Rolemaster, MERP (Middle Earth Role Playing) and Advanced AD&D. We had a couple of Warhammer RPG games going too, but that was too tough to last more than five minutes in!

    The attrocious Phantasy Star Universe, which tried to succeed Phantasy Star Online: Episodes 1 and 2. Another reason why I don't play JRPGs, next to the reason that most designers are paedophiles (as proven by Square Enix lore).

    Other than Skyrim, which is so big I haven't even grasped everything on it still, months later, the last RPG I actually sat and played through was Final Fantasy X, which is saying something. I'm much more of a fan of classic RPGs than the new ones. I don't care about cut scenes or big budget graphics, all I care about is a good story, good sound RPG fundamentals, and a killer soundtrack.

    D&D 4th Edition for me, less than 10 hours ago in fact.  Running the last bits of a campaign set in Neverwinter and after two game sessions of straight role playing, the group finally got to hit things again.  Had a new player in the group, too, hadn't played in like 8 years.  Fun times.
