Why is Pimp Still Being Used?

   I have read several comments in the forums about the problem that our ladies have with the word pimp and the way it is used here at HubPages.  Today I see it in big colorful ads.  I think that it wouldn't be too hard for the powers that be to honor the wishes of the ladies and find another word.  There seem to be a lot of talented writers associated with HubPages so it shouldn't be too hard to make this happen.

      Thank you.  It should offend women.  I think.  "Slave Trader" could not be "spun" to make it seem cool.

   I'm not offended by the word. Like I posting in a forum talking about it, the word has been around for centuries. The current saying "to pimp" is what it originally stood for. I see it as reclaiming a word.

   If it is all from Google then I guess it is out of our hands.  Maybe was misled.  Maybe it wasn't as big a deal to the ladies as I thought.

   Uninvited Writer and others taught me about the history of the word pimp, which was quite intersting.
   
   I still don't like it, but I've decided that I'm a bit over sensitive on the issue. Perhaps gang violence and pimping isn't the same in their cultures. Anyways I'm trying to get over myself and be more with it.
   
   And since it's coming from google, it's alot like the scientology ads. Not much we can do about it.

   I'm a lady and I don't have a problem with the word "Pimp" as it is used as slang. 
   
   Its original meaning was one of a onerous profession, but the word has evolved, as many words do, to mean something else.  "Pimpin" means good, awesome, cool.  "Pimp my ride" was actually a very nice reality show where a person could get their car fixed up.
   
   Pimp was bad, now its good, get with it.

      Yes, a pimp is a man who sells a woman, but that is only ONE definition.
      
      I don't know when the word "whore" is going to be cool, but I do know women who call each other "ho" (a shortened verison of the word whore) as a term of affection.
      
      Take something negative and turn it into a positive thing and it removes the sting.

    I guess my problem is the fact that actual pimps are still around and reaping the benefits of destroying other human beings.  I am a STD/HIV educator, so I have worked with many sex workers in education programs.  Pimps are not good, in any way.  As far as the word goes, the root is still the same.  A lot of people believe the stigma is gone from the "N" word, as well.  It just shouldn't be used, because we all know that words have power.

    The word 'pimp' first appeared in English in 1607 in a Thomas Middleton book entitled 'Your Five Gallants.' It's believe to have stemmed from the French infinitive 'pimper' meaning to dress up elegantly and from the present participle 'pimpant' meaning alluring in dress seductive.

       So, it went from good to bad, then from bad to good.  Now we're getting into popular consensus, again.  I am thinking about what "most people" think the word 'pimp' means... That could be bad on my part... and by 'bad' I mean 'bad'.

    Most people aren't offended by the word Pimp lol. I mean, listen to a Rap & R&B public radio station.
    Personal experience from playing online games, girls nowadays (teens to 20s) often don't care and they even use the word themselves. Most of the time the word isn't even used or applied correctly if you pay attention.

    the word pimp is used as a compliment to well dressed males. 
    As far the the word whore or ho, it has caused so much controversy where I live that it has been taken out of context and HO HO HO at Christmas time is an insult.
