With globalisation. Eroded borders and boundaries seem to mean that such definitions are becoming less clear.
Is it racist to have a concern that foriegners are taking over jobs. And bringing children that don't know the national language, and slow down all learning at extra expense.
Would a certain degree of division be a better idea?  ..Would more investment in the home economy of those out of work make more sense in the long run?

To assume that patriotism in the US is the same as racism, you would have to assume there is an American race... there isn't. As a matter of fact, it would be difficult to find an individual in the US that was 100% purely ANY race.

With that said, I've seen racism disguised as patriotism fairly often. I have seen patriotism taken to extremes lead to bigotry, especially with the fear that the country is being taken over by *insert nationality here*. However, that leads back to assuming that America only has one ethnicity.

In addition, immigration, in many ways, is an investment in the home economy and diversity always leads to growth.

You should add xenophobia to the mix.

While racists will use immigration and patriotism to hide their tracks, these concepts are not racist in themselves.

I want the sanctity of our borders respected by everyone on the outside regardless or race color and creed.

Love of country does not translate into denigrating others.

I like to think that to be a successful citizen, a desire to assimilate into the society and culture would be seen as advantageous without most of the rest of us having to make the point.

Patriotism: "Patriotism is, generally speaking, cultural attachment to one's homeland or devotion to one's country…" W

Racism: Racism consists of both prejudice and discrimination based in social perceptions of biological differences between peoples. It often takes the form of social actions, practices or beliefs, or political systems that consider different races to be ranked as inherently superior or inferior to each other, based on presumed shared inheritable traits."  W

These two principles have nothing to do with one another, as far as I can tell.

Kathryn , Yea for you , True !  To compare patriotism to racism is wrong ! They  are and will continue to be two separate issues !   Its okay to even close the borders against ALL immigration , and not have that considered an act of racism , A word  in fact, much overused today !    Ones national borders , its economy , its population has to be controlled in the end .  AND , doing so no more constitutes  racism than  actually limiting a certain nation or ethnicity from  our borders .! for instance why should Hispanics have an advantage in U.S. immigration ?Simply because they live next door  doesn't allow them special privileges , in fact shouldn't we be being fairer to ALL nations by having national quotas ?  Are we being fair to say  Turkey by geography , they have to use conventional  immigration techniques ,  {legal  for one! } to access US. immigration .No Virginia - in fact it's racist to allow one more access over another !
