Features for Responding to Hub Comments

If I view my account's Comments page, it's easy to view, approve and respond to unapproved comments. However, if I go to a new comment in one of my hubs and click Approve, I cannot reply to it directly on the comment. Instead, I have to go to my main Comments page and find the now approved comment in order to reply to it. This should be relatively easy, except for the fact that sorting the comments by date sorts them from oldest to newest instead of the other way around. I have to scroll to the bottom of the page, wait for more comments to load, scroll to the bottom of the page again, wait for more comments to load, etc. This is inefficient and time consuming.

Would it be possible to change the sort by date order to descending instead of ascending?

Also, would it be possible to allow us not only to approve new comments directly in the comments section of the relevant hub(s), as we do now, but also to reply to them immediately after approving them directly in the comments section of the hub?

Thanks very much for considering my request.

Why do you think you can't reply to a comment after approving it? You can reply to it there itself immediately after approving. There is always the comment box below to give your reply.
But, if you are replying to more than one comment at any time, then you need to reload your hub for each reply and then only approve the comment and write your reply. This is very easy instead of going to your main comments page and loading the comments.

Venkatachari M, I can only reply to comments on the Comments page of my account. Within individual hubs, I can only approve comments but not reply to them.

      Hi Margaret.

You can set your comments under the hubs to show most recent first - then you will not have to scroll down to the bottom to see the most recent comment posted.

      To set recent first:

From the Feed page click on comments (to the right of your profile pic)

Under Global Comment Capsule Settings, click on show settings and some options appear

If you want to have your most recent comments at the top of the comment section under your hubs, click on yes for Display most recent comments first.
      ***

The easiest way to approve and reply to your comments is to do it in the Comments section:

When you see a number next to comments (on the Feed page to the right of you profile pic), click on comments.

Comments will appear. You can read, approve and reply right there, without going to the hub. When you approve the comment a box will open for you to type your reply, when you are finished click on Submit. After you reply, your reply will disappear. Rest assured that the comment and your reply is in the comment section under the hub. It is automatic.

If you have more than one comment in that section, repeat the same steps.

PS: Any time you reply to a comment, use the person's name so they will know that reply is for their comment. I always start my replies with: Hi (Name) - some hubbers start with @ (Name).

Thank you very much for your detailed reply, Phyllis. I do have my global comment settings set to display the most recent comments first within the hub. However, I have not found a way to view the most recent comments on my account's Comments tab. And within the hub, although it is easy to find and reply to a comment, since the newest one is on top, I cannot reply to it within the hub's comments capsule.

The only way I know of to reply to a comment is on the main Comments tab. However, for some reason, although I get notifications of new comments via email,I don't also get a number notification above the Notifications tab in HP. (Maybe it's a toggle - you can get either but not both?) And if I click on the link in the email notification it takes me directly to the comment at the bottom of the hub, not to the main Comments tab/page. If I approve the comment in the hub before remembering that I won't be able to reply to it there, then I have to go back to the main Comments tab/page and try to find it there so I can reply. As I explained, since sorting the comments on that page by date defaults to ascending order and there is no apparent way to change it to descending order, finding the newly approved comment to reply to is cumbersome. Am I missing something?

Thank you also for the suggestion about responding to commenters by name. I always try to do that as well, for the reason you pointed out. smile

Again, thanks very much for taking the time to respond in such detail, Phyllis. I really appreciate it.

I hope that HubPages either will make it possible to reply to a comment directly in the hub's comments capsule (immediately after approving a new comment), or that the email notifications can be changed to link to the Comments tab/page's unapproved comments rather than to the comment in the hub's comments capsule.

I don't see the point in your being unable to comment on the hub itself. It never happened to me. Whether it is in ascending order or descending order, you can approve the comment and then go to the bottom or top as per your settings, and comment in the comment box. Only you need to browse up or down to find the comment box. Then what is the problem, I can't see.
And, one thing more. When you keep comments pending, and try to comment at a single sitting, then you need to reload the page each time as soon as you post a comment to approve the next one and to comment on it..

Since the comment notifications I receive (via email only) link directly to the comment in the hub's comments capsule, it makes sense that I should be able to not only approve the comment there (which I can) but also reply to it (which I cannot).

Obviously different hubbers have different preferences about how and where to comment. What I posted was a request to the HP staff to consider adding a new feature.

I don't understand the reason for your inability to reply. You disabled your own commenting option? Is there any such option present there?
Preferences are okay. But being unable to reply is something a problem to be worried for. It should not be so.

I approve and comment in the hub directly.  I rarely look at the comments section on my profile page. Even when I do, I'm still able to approve and comment in the hub itself.

Ditto, here also. I rarely go to my comments section. Only when I have to approve some anonymous comments. (I mean some comment missed in notifications or emails.)

There is no difference between replying on the approval page or on the hub. Your comment still appears in the exact same way on the hub.

      True.

Do I understand correctly that all of you who reply to comments directly in the hub approve the comment there and then simply write a comment on your own hub (as though you were commenting on someone else's hub) in order to reply?

If so, that's great! I didn't realize that I could do that without a Reply button like the one on the profile Comments page.

Thank you all very much for your help. Much appreciated!

That is correct, Margaret. You finally got it. That is why it is so important to use names when you reply (as you already do) to comments on your hubs - because there is no reply button to individual comments in the hub. You have to go to the bottom where the last box is an open box for your reply.

I think the point here is that if you want to reply directly to someone and make sure they receive the comment, there is no way of doing that.  Do they get a notification that "someone has posted to a hub page you commented on" email?  If not, then they may never see your reply.
