Dreams represent a relatively unknown realm to us, so anything is still possible there. I have had various dream experiences, including lucid dreams, sleep paralysis and conscious sleep. One thing that is common in all my experiences is the shear greatness of the experience. As if not of this world, which they are not. It is as if we can tap into another realm of existence via our dreams. SO to answer your question, I don't if we are contacted in our dreams, but I would believe it to happen there before waking life. We are simply too out of tune in our waking life, whereas we get back to our natural roots, unconsciously when we dream.

I've experienced visitation dreams yes. The dreams that are more than just dreams feel 'different'. I have an awareness within the visitation that that is exactly what it is, a visit, I don't think it's a dream. It's similar to being lucid.

I had one where my 2 grandmothers and 1 great grandmother were together visiting me. Up until that point I was dreaming that family had returned home and was very happy.
When my grandmothers arrived I immediately knew it was a visit, which meant the rest of the content of my dream was just that; a dream. Which upset me greatly as far as my family returning home was concerned. I remember crying if you are here then this is a dream. Their visit that time was a message of "we are watching over you".
I've also had a dream visit from a friend and he talked to me about how he felt about dying. And a few others.

In our dream state we are open and it is easy for us to be interacted with. I'm clairaudient and have had a few conversations with spirit about dreams. I've also had dreams where spirit have come through to speak with me and they thoroughly enjoy the face to face interaction, two way seeing for a change! It's interesting and exciting for them and kind of funny to be able to say to them "hey, that dream you were in of mine, why did you do a, b or c?" Then be able to discuss it.

So yes I believe it is more than just a dream if you have a visit experience!

When my father died, I dreamed about him, was that a visitation?  No, it was a wish fulfilment dream, I wished that my father was still alive, nothing more, nothing less, nothing mysterious.

Read Carl Jung on dreams and their meanings. Dreams can be any number of things, but visitations is not one of them. Dead people do not come back to talk to anyone regardless of what the occult would have you believe, at least not Christians. If you don't believe in God, then I doubt you would believe in dead spirits either, since they are part of the same realm. So God sends us messages, and we cannot understand God at His level. We do not speak His spiritual language, and He doesn't have a cell phone.

So our minds interpret His messages in a form we can understand. We must be able to see the metaphoric meanings. If we can't, then there are people who can help with dream interpretation. the appearance of a specific person has meaning in the events troubling your life. Just as they would be useful to you if still alive, their message in the dream is significant most times. Other times, it's just your dreaming mind having night trips with memories from the past. I may write about this later.

I have dreams of those who passed away. But I know dead persons spirits no longer stay in our world and they're off to somewhere.

No, I haven't, but my father just passed and I am expecting him to visit, either in a dream or when I'm awake.

I had a very vivid dream about my sixth grade teacher who died of cancer.
She came to me with pink flowers. She smiled at me and told me to get better soon.
    I never dream in color.
The pink was so vivid. And the roses were all pink. I don't know what it meant but I think she wanted me to get better.
    It was wonderful.

I have had 2 visitation dreams. One was my deceased father, and the other was completely unrelated - benevolent strangers while I was travelling years before my father died. They are unlike any regular dream. Usual dreams are quite surreal, your point of view moves around, the locations are unlike the reality. Visitation dreams are very different, when you've had one, you know it was something different, something real.

My father visited me a year after he died. It was in my bedroom, I awoke on my bed and was aware of someone in the room. I turned around and was startled to find someone standing on my bed. I quickly jumped up, it was still dark, but I could see. My Dad was standing there smiling at me and saying "it's alright" over and over. He didn't speak with his mouth, but the message came through loud and clear in my mind.

When I woke in the morning, I knew something unique had happened. Everything about it was very real and the message in it was clear. No confusion about what it meant. In a regular dream, your friends and family might appear in it as characters, and often lots of weird surreal stuff is happening; but it's not the same as a visitation dream. When you have a visitation dream, you are left with no doubt that someone was trying to contact you with a message.

I know it's easy to write off dreams as just pure fantasy of the mind, but that's only if you've only ever had non-sensical regular dreams.
