Growing old and loosing my sense of humor....help me please???

It seems like as I grow older I am loosing my sense of humor. Maybe because of increased responsibilities adding stress but many people still have theirs as they grow older. Please share your secret.

I think the key here is that everyone has a choice in the way they feel or think and with what they say, and that includes what they say to themselves. Firstly you need to stop taking yourself so seriously, learn to laugh at yourself. The next time you catch yourself thinking "well here I go again, I've lost my sense of humor" think about what you have just seen or heard and make yourself reassess it and find something amusing about it. I must admit it helps to spend time with others who make you laugh and to watch lot of comedy as well, after all laughter and humor are contagious.

Growing older I have also found I tend to take life too seriously. I think it is important to socialise with friends or family who have a fun sense of humour, to lighten you up.

Children in particular are a great source of fun, my two small nephews are hilarious.

My husband despite being 42, also has a childish sense of humour - He thinks it is imprtant to hold on to your inner child. What is wierd is that when he laughs really hard he doesn't make a sound, his whole body just shakes even if he has tears of laughter rolling down is cheeks.
We also regularly make a point of watching comedy movies.

Maybe, look up jokes on the internet.

When things get really stressful, take a step back and look at how bizarre life can be - have you seen some of those funny looking animals out there? There are some really wierd ones.

Anyway a joke to cheer you up, the only one i can think of at the moment.........

An elderly couple were sitting up side by side together in bed.
Reaching into his bedside cupboard the husband  took out a large shot-gun.
When he put the gun to his head his wife started to laugh.
Annoyed, he turned to his wife and said "I don't know what you are laughing about, your next!"

    boom boom

I try to find the humor in any situation. Age is only as old as you feel and I never got past 12. I love life and try to laugh every day. I think life is histerical, look around there's humor in everything if you look at it the right way.
If that doesn't work, just become as sarcastic as humanly possible, then at least you'll be amused.

I was told that as you get older your sense of humor does fade away. The average baby laughs 150 times a day! Every hear that comercial, "Have you laughed today?" It's an advertisment for that little wheel of cheese.

Since loosing a sense of humor can indicate possible cognitive decline (losing our ability to remember, process information, etc.  We need to do this in order to "get" a joke) it may make sense to do some brain teasers and other cognitive exercises.
A recent study showed that humor requires short-term memory, abstract reasoning, and cognitive flexibility.
If you are really serious about boosting your cognitive abilties, you could see a neuropsychologist who could make professional recommendations.  They may also recommend brain teasers.
The most important things we can do to avoid any cognitive decline as we get older is to remain active and continue to try new things.
Here is a list of activities that may help you:
    1. learn a new hobby every month
    2. start completing brain teasers and vary them.  Logic puzzles specifically target cognitive flexibility and abstract reasoning.  Find a book of logic puzzles with varying formats.  Finding the puzzles that challenge you but do not frustrate you to the point of giving up is key.  You'll slowly build up to the hard ones.
    3. Evaluate your life as you age and keep track of what you are no longer doing.  When we retire, we often completely stop using a function of our memory or reasoning.  Try to identify what you are no longer using day to day and add something similar (but more fun- you are retired!) and make sure you have it in your routine at least once per week.  Increasing your cognition may be as simple as making sure you still keep track of your own score when playing golf.

Sometimes just taking a break and getting away from your normal day-to-day grind can help pick up the ability to laugh. Sometimes agitation with the people around us can make a difference, which either requires a change of attitude about the people we have to deal with or a change of scenery in terms of a change of association. Sometimes we don't lose our sense of humor, but we actually mature and find that different things are funny than what previously was funny and this can actually be a very good thing...

there is an old saying, Don't take life too seriously... remember no one makes it out alive.  Humor has to come from an energy inside oneself.  if you have no energy, it does not happen.  take this as an indicator.  plan some me time if you are the introverted type, rest and relax.  plan some we time if you are an extrovert... play and wear yourself out to relax.  however you approach it, one must take care of oneself.  sometimes it truly is a hormone problem which can be resolved by a visit to the doctor... or sometimes it is an indicator to depression, again a trip to the doctor.  i hope some of this helps. take care.
