Should you just spend while you're young or save up for when you're older and retired?

We have saved all our married life so we could live well and travel.
Now one of us is passed away.Seems like we should have lived it up and lived in poverty now when
    we're old.

Yes, it is best to do both. Save a percentage for retirement, but don't let time pass you by. If you really want to buy something that will make you happy in the present, then budget for it!
Don't buy a bottle of fine wine and then let it sit until it sours and becomes undrinkable.
Also, you do need to travel and enjoy life while you are young because you just can't predict the future.
So plan on doing both while young. Save and spend.
Money isn't everything. If you can live on a strict budget when you are young, you can do it when you are old too. It's a lifestyle choice.

you never know if there will be a tomorrow, therefore live the best you can today ... if that means using your retirement funds, so be it.

It is important to live when you're young, but you have to prepare for the future.  You never know what the future holds- perhaps expensive medical care- and you don't want to be left without the resources to keep your life from being miserable.  It is a gamble, but if you can find ways to save money while still enjoying life it is imperative that you do so.  There is no guarantee that you will have any help at retirement anymore.

all I can say is this. nobody knows the future, but if you live until you are really old, you will pass the point where you are able to take care of yourself. and if there is no money  then, you will put your children in a real bind. In Canada, we have public medicine, but United States does not. You should never spend everything in case an emergency pops up.
