Why do women take birth control pills?

I would love to see an in depth answer about all the uses of birth control pills, why a doctor would subscribe them and why most women use them.. Reputable sources would be appreciated. People need to be educated.

One reason a doctor might prescribe birth control pills to a woman might be if she is about to undergo in vitro fertilization procedures. Sometimes they will stop the periods first, then give other drugs to induce ovulation so as to harvest the eggs at a time convenient to the specialist.

Sometimes they prescribe them to regulate hormones for women who have really heavy periods etc.  I know when my mother was approaching menopause she became really ill and was losing too much blood so they gave them to her for a few months to stop the excess bleeding.

I personally was put on them because of my history of ovarian cysts, irregular cycle and heavy flow that caused me to be near anemic. Also, I was put at slightly higher risk for ovarian cancer and my doctor suggested bc pills could reduce my chances of that. Here is information from the American Cancer Society about that study http://www.cancer.org/Cancer/news/News/ … ancer-risk .

my mom took birth control pills because she had four kids and thought that was enough. if you ask me, it was two too many for her to do a good job of parenting, but birth control wasn't invented soon enough.

Women don't just use birth control pills to prevent pregnancy.  I have a cousin who, when she first started having her menstrual cycle, had heavy and painful ones.  She could not walk because her legs and abdomen were so painful.  The doctor thought she might have endometriosis, but she didn't.  The doctor then prescribed her birth control pills to control the hormonal processes that were going on in her body.  After about 5 years, her cycles regulated, and her painful cycles slowly subsided. She is now off of the birth control pills.

Birth control pills aren't just prescribed to women who wish to avoid pregnancy. Adolescent girls who suffer from menstrual cramps, acne, PMS and the pain that accompanies endometriosis. My daughter used to have really bad acne and menstrual cramps as a teenager. When she got married and began using birth control pills all of that disappeared. You can read more in this article: http://www.youngwomenshealth.org/med-uses-ocp.html.

In addition to preventing pregnancy, many women go on birth control pills to avoid heavy, painful menstrual periods.

My girlfriend had a condition known as "anti-linear circumferentiality".....

Because of that, she could not follow a regular calendar, wherein the days go back-and-forth in lines... but she COULD understand what day it was as she took her B/C pills from the little round container.....   That's why she took them.......

I took birth control pills (plus used all other safety precautions) because I didn't want to have an unplanned pregnancy.  I knew I wanted to be a mother, but I also knew I wanted to choose when this wonderful event happened. I wanted to educate myself and be in a stable relationship, because I want to be the best parent I can be.
