    Should a member of good standing in the military be punished for criticizing Obama on FB?

    Sgt. Gary Stein, a 9 yr.veteran,  was dishonorably ousted from the Marine Corp. for calling Pres. Obama a coward and "the economic and religious enemy."

    There is no freedom of speech when you are in the military, especially if you criticize your superiors.

    Yeah criticizing a superior makes you liable for discharge, hardly rocket science.

    I am no fan of Barack Obama; however, he is the Commander-in-Chief of the U.S. Armed Forces.

    Therefore, it is a punishable offense for an active-duty member of the military to publicly criticize him -- and that is because, in the armed services, public criticism of commanders by both their subordinates and peers is offically and strictly prohibited.

    In my humble opinion, before I see any other replies, I would say yes.

    As one who served in the Navy for nine years, I came to understand that the military function is to serve the people of the nation, through the agency of the current government and with the Head of State as one's focus for loyalty and duty.

    If circumstances change such that the serving member cannot give his/her full, undivided loyalty to that Head of State (whom one assumes is in that Office with the agreement of the People), then the serving member must get out of the military.  Then, and only then, is he/she in a valid position to criticize.

    Open to other opinions on this.

    If the person we are talking about is still serving the military then his criticization towards Obama becomes different than criticization from a common man. This will not only reduce the trust factor of president but also provok others to do so. I am sure army has its own loop to entertain the issues but going on a social plateform doesnot seems as a nice idea.
