    There was a Family guy episode entitled Ocean's Three and a half that has a very great joke about this very topic. Stewie shared with Brian that he is writing a song about his new girlfiend and Brian jokes that they aren't a million of of those. Stewie challenges him to name 20. Brian without missing a beat rattles off twenty. Stewie screams for 5 more. Brian counters with 4 more. This goes back and forth for another minute until Stewie tires and tell Brian what to go do with himself. The rant can be found here on Wikiquote.

    Doesn't anybody remember Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons?  They had a huge smash with "Sherry"--and a non-smash with "Connie-O."
    
    And I don't think anybody mentioned the old ballad "Barbara Allen."
    
    Amazing omission:  the Beach Boys' "Barbara Ann."  (May have been on some of those lists, but I don't count those, they are no fun.)
    
    More recently (and in much darker veins), we should probably count "Jane Says" by (who else?) Jane's Addiction, and "Janie's Got A Gun," by Aerosmith.
    
    Lightening up (and adding a corn- or cheese-factor) there's always "Mame," from the Broadway songbook.  (OK, Jerry Herman actually wrote it.)
    
    How about the folk revival era?  There was "Good Night, Irene" which, though associated with the Weavers in the 1950s, was created in its current form by Huddie Leadbetter (AKA "Leadbelly"), drawing on folk sources--he credited his uncle Terrell with teaching him an earlier form of the song.
