Does anyone know exactly what college tuition covers?

I was in the bookstore of a major university.  The student in front of me was buying a blue book (60 cents plus 4 cents sales tax), so that he could take an essay test.  What exactly is covered by tuition?  Thousands of dollars for tuition and you have to buy your own test booklet?  Do they have premium and first class seating in lecture halls for an extra fee?  There are internet fees and a limited number of photocopies included on a tuition bill.  Do colleges have pay toilets?  The price of college is skyrocketing out of sight.  What is and what should be included in tuition?

College tuition, for most Universities, only covers your attendence and not your expenses. These thousands of dollars have to be paided just for the given persons attendence and this does not include books, meals, or housing; these fall under a seperate cost and not tutition.

Game Flex said it. Just your cost of attendance. Universities/colleges are for profit organizations. If you would like to compare costs with a non-profit university check out www.wgu.edu. My pell grant is within a few hundred dollars of covering all my expenses and if I really work at it I can lower my cost of attendance bellow $100/credit hour. That's pretty incredible for a four year school.

It is still amazing how much gets tacked on as extra fees.  Many fees that every student may not take advantage of.  Also the extra fees allows the college to publish a "lower" tuition rate for the guide books.  But, not including a blue book, cheap!

Isn't that the truth. I applied to a local community college that advertised $75/CU. By the time they applied all the extra fees per CU it was almost $125/CU plus lab fees. I pay a one time lab fee of $300 and a small library fee at WGU.

College tuition usually covers your classes and facilities and services.  These include use of the library, health care center, computers and exercise facilities.
As full time students, students can take anywhere from 12 to 18 hours and these are covered by your college tuition.
