   I'd imagine that they are afraid that the cross is going to be driven through their heart.  After all, stakes are the vampires' natural enemy.  Now as for holy water, do you have any idea how many bacteria breed in that water?  People stick their hands in it all the time.  No wonder it causes problems for the vampires' skin.

   Now that Johnny Depp has done Dark Shadows, can I call him in as my lifeline for the answer?  Or would that be death line?  By the way, in Van Helsing, Dracula wasn't really adversely effected by them.
   MickS is half right...the mythological afraid of the Real.  Oh, on a different plane... Spad biplane, I think...
   Satan and his fellow fallen angels fear Christ's work on the Cross, but a small replica may not be too effective in direct occult attacks to be used as a talisman the way Israel used the Ark of the Covenant at Shiloh and got whupped, as they used to say during the American Civil War.  I'd recommend the whole armor of God detailed in Ephesians 6:10-20...

   You are behind the times in your vampire lore. Vampires are more afraid of being seen sparkling in the sun.  If I was a vampire , I would not want my Prince of Darkness rep ruined by glittering like Tinker Bell. Oh, and they are afraid of having bad hair days.

   Seriously? You actually believe in vampires? Vampires are just boogeymen made up in a legend to frighten you. Pretty much like Satan was invented to frighten you. When you get older, you'll understand. I hope.

    Vampires are really only people that believe they are vampires; some think orthodoxy vampirism is the way to go, and others just occasionally play the role. What a person believes to be true, by virtue of the embraced belief, will become truth for them, whether their reality holds water and life or not. If it does not hold water and life, it will inevitably perish, with or without the person who ascribes to that belief.
    The cross, ostensibly for the prevailing number of Christian believers, represents salvation and eternal life -erroneously of course, because the cross is in fact a celebratory representation of the "crucifixion" of Christ, whereas the Atonement of Christ (through repentance) properly represents the celebratory "resurrection" of Christ, and our redemption unto Him; which would you rather adopt as a symbol of friendship to indeed anyone, the cross or the Atonement?
    Vampires then, knowing that a house divided upon itself cannot stand, are afraid of the cross because, either way, it represents the immanent demise of their chosen life and consequence following. They know this to be true because of the Grace of God instilling upon their minds, in a still small voice, the veracity of the evil they have chosen to replicate, and they know the fact that good will always conquer evil, with a vengeance that belongs only to the LORD.
