Why is Fifty Shades of Grey so popular?
I read this book a while back and I found it to be an interesting read, as well as very provocative as well as entertaining as hell, however I found it also to be a bit disturbing. I didn't take this novel... read more

I think because deep down in every single person, there is a fantasy [usually not acted on] of either wanting to be dominated.... or The Dom )

Most of the popularity I would say is from the hype. Everyone is talking about so more and more people start to read it.
I'm reading them now, and find them pretty entertaining. It's not the most beautifully written book of course. But I actually love the story so far and I love that someone wrote about something we would usually consider taboo.
Christian (the lead male role, aka Mr. Grey) I find to be an intense, deep character, which is what keeps me so hooked. I want to know more about this character and why he is the way he is.
To me the book is so much more than sex. That is just normally the main focus for those that are talking about it.

I think like any popular novel series, there is a lot of enthusiasm and a lot of hype about it. That instantly makes it more popular. It also undeniably a unique story line. It is an interesting mix of an erotic novel and a romance, and it also manages to be amusing and witty, and despite some of the more disturbing scenes, the characters are extremely relatable and likable. I wrote hubs on each one, including a synopsis and my personal thoughts if you're interested!

For me, I really like Ana, the main character. I find her reasoning very similar to what I would think in her shoes. And Christian is so intriguing and handsome. I really wanted to know how the story developed - besides orgasms.
So much chemistry and so much love, but those 50 shades in the way...
Overall it made me think about "living life as you please", from a different perspective.

Aside from the hype, it is an escape.  There are aspects of Ana that every woman can relate to.  We all had our first time.  We all wish it could happen again.  We all want to experience the passion once more.  Also it is a fluffy, easy read so it has a larger audience base and even if life is busy (kids, work), everyone has time to escape with Fifty Shades of Grey.

I thought the characters lacked depth and I won't be rushing to find out what happens to them.  I read a lot, so if someone lends me the sequels I'll give them a go, but I won't be parting with my cash!  I did buy the first novel, on a whim when girl friends on facebook were raving about it and one put an Amazon link up.  Two clicks later, my book was on its way.  I very rarely buy books on such a whim but I got caught up in the hype and I didn't want to feel left out!

I believe it is because we all have a 'naughty' side.  We all have fantasies.  The book, which has received much criticism, taps into the inner goddess of many women who tend to bottle up, embarrassed of their sexuality.  Life can be a bit hum drum sometimes.  Escapism is truly fantastic.  Even when written quite poorly!

In my perspective, Fifty Shades of Grey earned so much popularity because it's originally a fanfiction from the Twilight Series hence, it made a huge uproar to the Twilight community. Also, the 'naughty' side drives people to read and recommend it to their friends. smile

I read the whole series simply because of the hype. There is a lot of sex going on, some good, some a little bit out of the norm(from the African perspective). I think that the whole story is built along the lines of the Silhouettes as well as the Mill and Boons (if the sex is not considered).
I love the story, but i wish it had less sex to be honest. On the whole though, i probably would give it a 7 out of 10.
