If you cut your finger down to the nerve, how long do you think it will take to heal?

I cut my finger on a knife at an angle. It sliced a ways in and looked deep. It was bleeding really good for awhile. It feels like I hit the nerve in my finger. How long do you think it might take to heal with a cut that deep?

Same has happened with me few times. Fingers are very sensitive and have high blood flow, so it would heal up very soon; just within 3-4 days.

I think it all depends on your own ability to heal. I am sure You have already wrapped-up your finger to stop the bleeding and keep the wound closed. On top of that, I would meditate on healing the finger. You can use the power of intent, visualization, etc. Most of all, You need to have faith in yourself and your ability to heal. Your body has everything it needs in order to heal and concentrating on this, will help to heal faster. That is just my opinion and part of what I do.

I wish your wound heals as soon as possible!

    All the best.

It depends. If its a clean cut, and you washed with clean water and/or some antiseptic-knife cuts heal quiet quickly - usually 72 hours- however I don't know what you mean by you hit a nerve. the nerves in fingers run on the sides. So you only cut the digital nerve if you cut the sides. these are usually so fine you don't really miss much sensation and as the skin flap stays close together they knit quit e well.

If you cut yourself on the palmar side or on the dorsal side of the finger you could hit the tendon. In this case you wouldn't be able to move the finger. So in all likelihood this sounds like a clean cut.
If you're not sure contact a medical professional to be safe. Hope this helps.

I have been a butcher for over 30 years, and have had my share of severe cuts. I would say about 6 weeks is about right for the feeling to return completely beyond the severed nerve. I had severed a nerve in my wrist in November of 2011, and the back of my hand is still numb.

Ok.. if you hit a nerve, you'll feel numbness in your fingers or hand for that matter (it's all connected). I wouldn't worry about it; as fingers' cuts looks a lot deeper than it is, but if you feel - you are losing the feeling or control over your fingers, then I would suggest to see a doctor just for assurance..
as for the excessive bleeding, well.. low levels of iron in the body causes sensitivity to cuts, thus you bleed a lot... most of the world's population suffer from low iron levels, but we tend to ignore it until it gets severe..
low iron levels also slows down the wound healing process, so it would probably take a week or so..

    Hope that helped

the doc said he could sew the nerve, but there is no need as it will heal on it's own. It has been about 1 month now.
Sometimes I get a jabbing feeling like a needle in the end of my finger.
just a second or two. does it mean its healing?

After my accident I can tell you what all my doctors told me. Nerves never repair themselves. So if you cut the nerve, its numb the rest of your life. My shoulder knows that.

See my doctor said they do?
      Is he blowing smoke?
I cut my hand with a bandsaw below my little finger, and it nicked the bone, and they said it nicked the tendon. I have numbness in the outside of my finger. feels like wood. will it go away.

Nerves grow very slowly, like 1 mm every 5 years.  So it depends greatly on the amount of trauma to the area.  Could be a long time, or never for 100 percent recovery.

The ER doctor told me it may never return. (feeling) I can move my finger pretty good. still can't close my fist all the way. If the guy I was working with had and mechanical know how, I would have let him cut the post. Maybe l should have let him.

It depends on your own body's healing power. Some people heal faster than others. It could also depend on what medication you are taking.

Also, depending on if you cut the nerve, that part may never be the same. I sliced my finger deep and cut the nerve. I have a permanent numb spot where the scar is because of that. But it works just fine, I just can't feel anything if you touch that exact spot.

Rinse with cool clean water. Wipe with a medicated wet cloth.  Pour over the finger peroxide.  The deeper the sting.  May mean you need to go in for a few stitched to close the wound and protect against infection.  Go to emergency center, find out the status on your deep cut.   If you are away from fresh water, but have a few of those little packets of salt, sprinkle, temporary until you can get to a nearby rest room if you are on the beach.  It would be in your best interest and for your wellness, to have it checked out, as soon as you can.  Depending on the cut, it can take a few days to a month.  And it will hurt,  for even a longer time.  Baby it every day with putting a little Neosprorin salve with the pain relief.  Its quite helpful with cuts!  I've cut myself from time to time.  And I really hate the pain afterwards!

I think it would heel in two weeks if it is not disturbed. Eating papaya will promote the healing power of your body.

I had similar injury like you, there was a nerve involved and I couldn't move the finger anymore. Few months after the injury I had a surgery (by a hand-surgeon) and now my finger is almost like new.

What about your finger? How it feels now? I hope that it's much better.

You should always get it checked. If you really cut a nerve it will be damaged forever. Some repair a little, but never the same. My brother had surgery to repair his. The finger is still damaged, but not like it was. I had surgery on the nerves in my hand and it's never going to be back to normal. It really depends on the damage done.

Under all circumstances this means your finger never is busted, a huge majority of people have to get their finger cut off , or the part slit, in order to operate their hand. If your finger is not seen almost as soon as it happens, your whole hand can get infected & you can loose your hand. If you have any questions, I'm a real doctor. Please email me @ dranothy@yahoo.com (I locate at the hospital in Bronx)
