What is the point of globalization and foreign policy if we do not take care of our own people?

It seems that the differeneces in culture, governments and ambitions are still too far apart for globalization to really make a difference. As a nation, should we continue to stretch our own resources thin to protect the interests of big business? Should we continue to discard our own pride as a nation while we grow third world cities within our own borders? I am by no means suggesting that more social programs are the answer... What I am suggesting is a government that provides opportunity for people to develop themselves into something more than they are.

Yes, I know what you're saying; globalization is really an operation of making monied interests freer to exploit people and resources, making huge profits, while simultaneously people are neglected and our conditions deteriorate.

The  easing of  restrictions on working globally has benefitted me as an individual, but  successive British governments encouraged importation of cheap, largely low quality, labour from what were then developing countries thus harming the people.

Yes we really should focus on ourselves for now our country is quickly crumbling off its foundation and the government doesn't seem to care.

I agree, DS. The gov't doesn't seem to care because they're distracted. Their real bosses have an agenda that calls for the dismantling of America. The Supreme Court has already declared that Corporations are "people."

Without globalization you would have no markets and you would have perished long before.

International trade is good. But is that the same as global corporate hegemony?

Without globalization we would have perfected sustainable consumerism and lessened poverty.

No and my opinion us only regarding globalization.
And davenmidtown, capitalism(especially a service economy) works  on increased demand, that is, an eternal market which cannot happen in a closed economy.

Funny, I seem to recall 1933 Germany doing pretty well! Until the globalists ganged up on them.

I see a difference between building american products and being a closed economy. We have eliminated tariffs which should have offset the cost of American labor and in turn the products we buy are made elsewhere...

      What is Global Corporate Hegemony?
And: how shall we, as a global people, find resolve in critically updating our platforms of globalization on a socio, economic and ecological fashion?

Corporations are legally bound to be selfish. It is their fiduciary duty to do everything they can to increase the bottom line for the shareholders. Those interests have nothing to do with the health and well-being of America. In fact, they work counter to the health and prosperity of America.

That's why Corporations should be kicked out of Washington. That's why all politicians should shun lobbyists and Corporate campaign financing. A few thousand Corporations (now declared to be "people") are shutting out 300+ million citizens. The Constitution is nearly gone -- shredded by Congress and the last few Presidents.

Compassion is good, but it can never be legislated. I used to think the government helping people was a good thing, but entitlement programs create more problems than they fix. And they give Power Elite more chances to siphon off funds by the Billions.

Ron Paul's plan to strip down the government to the barest bones Constitutional level could not be done over night, but it would result in far more money for the individual citizen. Slash spending by a Trillion dollars and we could eliminate income tax. Remove the tax burden from individual citizens and there'd be far more money to go around, stimulating the heck out of the economy.

Base the dollar not on debt (a negative), but on substance (a positive), and then the creation of new dollars will add to prosperity, not detract from it.

Government "compassion" is Communist/Socialist. The idea is nice, on the surface, but effectively poison. Look what happened to government getting involved with medicine. Higher costs and poorer service. Just try to ask your doctor a question. Most doctors I've had, I feel rushed if I attempt to ask a question or two ... or 5 or 10. One side effect is learned helplessness.

If we focus on centralization of power and compassion, we get tyranny. If we focus on local power and compassion, we get the personal touch that really helps people.

There are a few of the Power Elite who hunger for a One-World government -- enough to kill for it. That's what happened on 9/11. The Rockefellers, their ilk, and their puppets in government set it up and blamed it on a convenient set of patsies. That's why the FBI was told to stand down from stopping the Muslim CIA operatives in the US. Those "terrorists" needed to be at the right place and at the right time to fulfill their patsy status.

When the $16+ Trillion bubble bursts, the globalists will have their goal

Perhaps then corporate charters should be amended to include a requirement to further  all stakeholders, workers, society, and the communities/countries in which the corporation operates.

Frankly I wonder why people talk of globalization, which is directly related to political situation. With the entire Islamic world ranged against the USA there will never be total globalization

    1. davenmidtown profile image68
davenmidtownposted 11 years agoin reply to this

This was sort of my point... well not so much the Islamic world part...but the fact that globalization is a word used to describe a unified platform...which the world is not. Whether that be in terms of currency, politics, or regligion....

Globalization as a whole is a phenomenon that is occurring naturally because of population growth, improved ability to communicate and changes in the availability of and need for natural resources.  Globalization of business is taking place in order to exploit cheaper labor markets.  The United States has been the most wealthy 5% of the world population.  I think it is natural for some correction of this to take place.  I think also it is not productive to blame the government for any perceived decline in American pride.  Protectionism and isolationism will not protect our economy or our jobs.  Pride in America must come from Americans.  Build American, buy American, and as an American love your neighbor and we'll all see things improve.

The terms "protectionism and isolationism" are globalist/marxist invented terms to margianalize those who would put America first. The globalists smeered the America First movement by calling them "isolationists" for opposing American entry into WW2.

I am not sure globalization is a natural occuring phenomenon. It may be occuring because of pouplation expansion but that seems more forced than natural. Taking care of our people is not isolationism is humanitarian. My Chevy was made in Canada.....

According to the Online Etymology Dictionary, the term, "protectionism" originated in 1789 and "isolationism" was originated in 1922, well before WWII.  I am only suggesting that neither are sound economic policy.

We do take care of our own people... but sometimes there are glitches in the system, which means that we need to improve our talents and ablities regarding calculating and tuning up in the regard of ethics.

Globalization will happen as the cultures practice openess to one another in a manner that aids the maturation of the species. It will also help if the English language continues to assimilate other vocabulary, and forms of communication, of future former languages... If you look at the history of the English  language, it is meant to be a universal language that assimilates other languages so that exchanges regarding trade and culture come easier to the travelers, settlers, and the locals who were formerly foreigners.

Third world cities cannot grow in a developed nation such as ours- if such a degenerative occurance is happening, those who are aware of such places need to stand up and prevent such happenings, because it is their obligated duty as citizens. Also, all people need to maintain their awareness and understanding regarding what it really means to be a citizen... it is every citizen's responsiblity to look out for the future of their country and especially planet, starting from the household and local level. A sense of community and family must be rebooted into the minds of the citizens, and this begins with engaging in dialogues with those who are aware. Furthermore we must extend our hands and share our sense of pride (family values) with other nations, beginning with our neighbors and in graduation: the rest of this world and beyond.

We may have more available to people if those people have money, but we do not take care of our own people. I use the jobless rate, homeless rate, and many other factors of poverty to say this. Family values??? what are those??? to many definitions!!
