Another way apart from backlinks

   Hi guys, may page rank is too poor, i have been rare at hubpages just to create backlinks. But nothing seems to be on my side
   
   Please tell, is there another way to increase page rank rather than backlinks. am too tired

      As far as page rank is concerned, it completely depends on backlinks towards the page as well as backlinks to the site's main page.
      
      Other factors like title, content etc will no doubt help you rank higher in search engines. But pagerank depends upon backlinks solely.
      
      If your site is penalized by Google, you won't get any pagerank despite having tons of backlinks. You can read more about backlinks and penalty in my hubs.

         I always thought that was the case, but why do my hubs have differing pageranks?  Some of them are PR2 some PR3 etc. and none have any backlinks, not external from outside of hubpages anyway.

            Cause they are linked to from different pages, that in turn have different pagerank, too.
            
            You can start with wikipedia to get the initial understanding.

               Aha, cheers for the explanation Misha, I didn't take into account the differing PR of the 'related' hubs etc. that linked to them.

   I spend almost no time working on backlinks and instead put a lot of effort into writing good hubs.  They really do take care of themselves with good content.

      I agree with Relache.  It's one of the beauties of HubPages, that the site's high page rank means your Hubs get noticed without a lot of promotion. 
      
      I do promote my websites, and occasionally in the process of doing that, I'll come across an opportunity to link to a Hub.  But otherwise I don't do a lot.  In fact, the reverse is true - I use HubPages to provide backlinks to my sites.

      To add to what relache said, Hubpages itself gives plenty of backlinks if you are smart.
      
      1) Put your hubs in a group
      
      2) Link to your own relevant hubs
      
      3) Smart use of tags will give plenty of backlinks

      I find if you just do those few things and choose keywords that aren't super competitive, good content will rank pretty well on its own.

         These 3 items are pretty big too and I agree with what other say about writing good content. I got a natural link from someones blog to my mead hub and not only did it make me estatic but it brought a lot of traffic for about a week.
         
         People love to link but they dont like to link to poor quality

      Yes, if you choose non-competitive subject but if you're targeting topics like loan, finance, plastic surgery, etc your hubs will never take care of themselves with good content alone.
      
      Try writing a hub on "How to Make Money Online?" without backlink and see where it goes.

   It is the same with Google. They are assessing your site and links according to content and relevancy.
   
   What I am saying is this:- If you have a site dedicated to fishing and another site that is page rank 1 (also about fishing)links to you, you will get some flow-on from their page rank. This will increase your rank status.
   
   However if you have the same site and there is a page rank 1 site about power tools linking to your site, you will not have a positive flow-on from that link.
   
   You see Google will interpret that as VERY LOW relevancy and do actually push you further down if you have a lot of them. This has come about due to the "Link Farms" selling backlinks.
   
   What you WILL ALWAYS have good results with is providing informative, well written content for your readers and the ranking will take care of itself.
   
   Bottom line is "Why should you be rewarded for poor content". I am not saying your stuff is but I think you know what I mean with this comment.

   I think a lot of it is about choosing the right key phrase to optomise for. You want to find a key phrase with plenty of searches but not much competition. The more competition there is the more backlinking you need to do.
   
   Once you've chosen your keyphrase it needs to be in your url, title, summary, first sentence, tag, and a few times through the article. The article needs to be good though - I looked at a couple of yours and they are a bit short. You need at least 800 words. Also consider putting the text in more than one capsule and choosing good subtitles. You will also need better tags - yours are to generic and so you will never rank anywhere with them.
   
   I'd suggest using googles keyword tool.
