Is Hubpages primarily for how-to, and educational hubs?
Out of hundreds of Hubs I've read since joining, I don't find many fictional or creative writing pieces. Is it because how-to's, and educational works get more traffic?
I wouldn't say it's primarily for how-to's and educational hubs. I would say that those are a lot easier for people to write sometimes, which is why you see so many of them. Plus, many people who come to hubpages want to make money by writing and a how-to hub is more likely to do that than a poem. It's quite possible they do get more traffic, but I personally have never written one. I write poetry and fiction on here and all the people I'm following do the same, so they are out there. Are you actually looking under the books and literature category? That's where I find new people to follow.
Sunny thanks, for some strange reason I had it in my head that books and literature would be more like a review of books and such. I'll make sure to check it out.
You can actually follow categories and see everything new that is published. Go to upper left menu: explore - Hubs - then select Books, Literature, and writing, and any sub-categories you like, and click the follow button (upper right) to follow.
Hi, Mike! I'm a newbie here, too, and at first glance it certainly can appear that HubPages is ALL about practical writing and making money with it. Granted, I came here to peddle my papers, too, so to speak; but I do not see writing how-tos as being non-creative, nor do I agree that writing how-tos is easy particularly. If you truly want to write, you can find a niche (probably more than one) in HubPages where you feel comfortable. You may have to hunt for it (them), however! HP is a great "learn by doing" academy for writers of all inclinations.
I don't think they are uncreative Jim I just meant creative writing as a genre like poetry, fiction etc. I've been spending more time on HP reading others work than writing my own, and I completely agree this is a great place to sharpen skills. Thanks
People write on HP for different reasons, and there are more and more "creative writers" all the time. In my opinion, this is not the best format for poets and such. This is because the way HP uses SEO (Search Engine Optimizing). I have written very few "how to" articles for it really is not my thing...
Thanks Highvoltage I guess I really have to broaden the way I look at things. I would write just for the pleasure of writing even though I'm not great at it, where others are in it for strictly monetary reasons, others are in the gray between. Thanks
HubPages is a place for any writer of article-length pieces, including fiction and poetry, to write and publish. As long as it is not a blog or offensive, write whatever you want to write.
Realize, though, that, if you want to make money on HubPages, that is a different story. Practical inspiration, how-to, and education succeed there, and it is good to be expert in a few things are write excellent articles on them. but that's only if you want to make money.
It is harder to find fiction and poetry, because they don't have keywords that put them in effective categories. You have to browse a bit. But fiction, poetry, spirituality, politics, personal essays - it's all here and it's all welcome.
I have been with Hubpages for a couple of months and have read articles on a variety of genres. Some Hubbers write poetry, recipes, and short stories.

I log on every day, and it seems that I always find negative things popping up in the forums. I am sorry that so many people are struggling on HubPages. From SEO issues to having popular hubs unfeatured for a multitude of reasons, it seems very discouraging for any newcomers. When I first got here...

So I've been on Medium for a year and Hubpages for six years (my second time). I've come to the conclusion that they can benefit each other.I have twice now earned quite a bit more on hubpages as a result of an article on Medium. A few days ago, I posted a link to one one of my hubpage articles,...

I feel concerned that the reason google may prefer ehow as opposed to hubpages, is because there is an abundance of poetry and short stories. I am not by any means saying that those who publish the short stories and poetry are not good, but they are not usually searchable or high market. I...

I know that this is the most asked question here, but I'd still really appreciate it if anybody answered.I've been on Hubpages for about 6 months now, and I've just published my 7th Hub, and I'm starting to write a few more. As of right now, I have 239 total views, and each Hub has roughly 36...
