this is a really good question - for movies, I prefer the physical DVD and Blu-Ray, for music I prefer the digital mp3 purchases but will purchase a cd for a favorite artist or to help a cause like the 121212 concert

It depends of what time of media and it's availability, if it's available only online, then I will buy it online, however if it is available on the local market, then it's much better.

Great question!  I always used to love to have a physical product, as it felt like I was getting some value for my money.  However, as time goes on there are some very innovative ways of financing and producing media popping up, mostly online, and (particularly in the music business) we are in the days where fans can actually invest a product digitally with the possibility of making a financial return.  I have therefore started to invest much more in digital products and I have actually made quite a bit of profit from doing so too and now with stores like HMV going into administration it's unclear who the major retailer for physical media products is going to be.  There are less and less CD's, DVD's, etc available in the high street stores these days.  In addition, fan-funding models are providing great value for money aswell as some of the fantastic incentives they offer.

I'm a rabid music geek/CD collector and always prefer the physical version rather than an MP3 download. I just like having all the "stuff" that comes with it (artwork, liner notes, photos, etc.)

I agree, this is one of the reasons I used to like having a physical product.  However, these days with digital purchases you still get the artwork, lyric sheets, liner notes, etc but delivered digitally.  Some also offer ongoing digital products.

Yeah, I know, but it's not the same. I'm a collector, I like to have something I can hold in my hand and put on a shelf.

True, I know what you mean.  However, digitally I can now invest in some of my favourite artists and make a massive profit and also get music from them that they don't release commercially, so it's never available in the retail outlets.

Definitely physically, for two reasons; one, I know it's mine and I have it in my possession to use over and over...two, I don't have to worry about back-ups or computer crashes because I have the hard copy...oh yeah, there is a third, I am a baby boomer and we always owned our own records and such!

If it's something I really like (movies or music), I'd rather have it physically in my hand. Also, if I want a whole CD, I'll get the physical one. But, if I just want a single song, I would most likely download it.
