   How many languages do you know and in which country do you live?
   
   I frequently hear comments about how people in the United States generally only know English, whereas in many other countries people generally know multiple languages.

   I am an American.  English is my native language. I also can communicate passably in Mandarin Chinese.  I known smatterings of other European languages, including Russian, but none well enough to communicate more than the very most basic ideas.  (e.g.  two, thanks. ..)

   I am German, was raised in the US. That helps me to speak two native languages. My wife is Russian, giving me a headstart for Russian. And then there is French, my pain in the ass at school, but i get by well enough in France.

   I live in New Zealand - I speak English and enough Te Reo Maori and NZ Sign Language to get by when required - the three national languages of New Zealand.
   
   I know little bits of other languages of the countries I've visited, and the languages I needed to learn at school like German, French, Japanese and Spanish, but know more in NZSL and Te Reo Maori as they are native to my own country (though, Te Reo Maori can be overlapped with Cook Island Maori also...very similar.)

   I speak my own language which is Tagalog plus some of our dialects,Spoken Arabic (Kuwaiti Arabic) and my second language is English. I live in the United Kingdom. So anyone out there who needs a translator from Tagalog to English or vice versa.

   I am British (living in England at the moment) and I speak English, French and Spanish. I also speak conversational Italian, German and Greek.
   
   I was a languages teacher in high schools for 13 years in England and I must say that, in comparison to the rest of Europe, the Brits are usually put to shame with our language skills. I believe this is because of the somewhat arrogant attitude that everyone speaks English (or should) so why bother? Obviously there are linguists like me in the UK and also in America but perhaps it is this perceived domination of the English language that causes people to be less keen to learn other languages. There just isn't the urgency for English speakers to learn other languages whereas in other countries it can be much more important for people.

    I was born in Puerto Rico and grew in The South Bronx, NY. I know Spanish, English and American Sign Language. I also no Spanglish but don't think that is consider a language yet is more Newyorican getto talk lol.
