Has social media helped or hindered your personal relationships?

Often times social networking sites such as facebook, instagram, and twitter can be fun at first. Have you noticed that they are helping you stay connected, or causing problems in your personal relationships?

They haven't caused any problems let for us that I'm aware of.  We use FB to stay in touch with people we otherwise may not see or speak to that often.  I also use social media to promote my work so I try to be pretty laid back in most of my postings.

I guess if we consider personal relationships to be bonds with friends and family etc, social media has helped to keep us more connected yet ironically more distant.

Gone are the days where we remember our friends birthdays and think of ways to surprise or wish them. For example; now instead of meeting up, we will just check the facebook notifications that have replaced their presence.

Depending on where my head is, I've found that social media can cause a certain level of jealousy towards others, if they're going on fun trip, etc. But other times, when I'm feeling more myself, I love seeing the pictures and knowing what my friends are up to.

I think it's good for keeping in touch and up to date with what people are doing. It's good for networking on a professional level.

It's definitely killed the more personal relationships between friends and family, but since I've grown up more on technology it feels normal to talk to people in a semi-distant fashion.

Yes, Jealousy can be a problem a major factor.  It is nice to keep in touch with distant relatives but some days it seems we aren't really connecting, just collecting dust on a profile.

Definitely hindered. I know people who spend their evenings on Facebook, Twitter, and other social networks instead of spending that time with their partner. It's a sign that we take our partners for granted. I've stayed at friends houses and in the evening one of them has been on their laptop whilst the other is on their mobile phone. Where's the communication with the person in the room with you? And TV is just as bad.

I agree.  You will even see this type of behavior going on in restaurants because of all the mobile apps. It's almost like people forgot how to connect before these social networks came along.

I guess it all depends on one's expectation of how they should relate to others. One thing is for certain social media makes it a lot easier to stay in contact with relatives that live in far off long distance places.
Children can now email grandparents school photos and letters, long distance relationships are a little easier to cope with using email, text, Skype, and Twitter than it was back in the days of scheduling long distant phone calls and sending snail mail.

The social media platform I use most is Facebook, and it has not caused any problems in my personal relationships. I think it has to be kept in perspective for what it can and cannot do. My close, personal relationships have nothing to do with social media because that's not the place to conduct close relationships!

Social media is, by its nature, fairly superficial, so I only use it to further casual and acquaintance-type relationships, which Facebook is actually great for. I keep my personal relationships off social media and in real life where they belong.

    It's a disaster.
I don't care what the heck people I haven't seen in 30 years are doing.
It's caused me more pain and I've lost my own identity because people keep on putting their ideas of who they want me to be instead of who I am.
I grew up with a disability. And those on FB still think I'm stupid and ignorant and they get angry if I show them pictures of my niece and nephew.
If I have too many friends they get mad.
I miss seeing some people but for me I don't need social media to tell me who I am or how to think. And that's all it does.
I find it funny though how all those who picked on me because I had a disability will champion other causes yet not even send me a message of hello or how are you.
    I seem to do that.
It's just another way we have to cut ourselves off from the true world.

I'm sorry to hear that, I don't think it's for everyone.  There are plenty of days I wonder why I still engage on social networks.
