What kind of music do you listen to while writing?

Do you write better to a face paced tempo, or a slow one? Can you tell us why?
Is there a particular singer or group that you listen to while writing? I tend to do a lot of writing to Barry Manilow. Yes, I said Barry Manilow.

Sometimes I won't listen to any music at all while writing but when Ido it tends to be 'easy listening' types of music (not disimmilar to Manilow) but anything that allows me to concentrate on the review at hand and not get distracted really. Slow tempo for me works very well. Some chilled stuff like Mariah Carey, Joss Stone or Joe are a few pretty non manly examples!

Slower tempos seem to work better for me as well.

I try to listen to music specifically that I don't know the words to, otherwise I find myself getting caught up in the song and forget to write. I like listening to music on the radio, as I've fallen behind on the popular music scene and won't be distracted by the words, but the melodies are catchy. I also like listening to Mozart, Beethoven, Bach - something without vocals, that changes tempo at certain intervals. I also like OSTs from video games, as well - Halo, Mass Effect and the Legend of Zelda are definitely my favourites.

A really good OST if you like these is from Nier. Really haunting but absolutely beautiful. If you want something a bit more 80s and funky try Streets of Rage OST or Double Dragon Neon OST:-)

That is kind of funny. I do the same thing. I'll be writing, and then all of a sudden I'm singing. I usually consider that a break.

I have listened to the classics while writing, but I find my mind trying to go along with the tempo. My husband thinks it's funny.

I love turning Spotify on and just play music softly. I'd listen to big band music, jazz, blues, pop, and rock. It depends on my mood but I find it helpful to have music in the background with the volume turned down a little bit.

My son loves Spotify, but I have never tried it myself.

I don't. Listening to music highly distracts me. ADD over here.

I get distracted without some kind of noise. I use to want the radio on when studying, and my mom would tell me to turn it off. I suddenly couldn't think anymore...LOL.

My husband used to go through that. But his father always hit him upside the head if he was caught. I'm glad your mother just turned the music off.

Music I find is terribly distracting and I almost always write in absolute silence! Sometimes when I have good energy, I'll put a tv on in another room for background noise or rarely, I'll put on an online radio station. Thanks!

I do not usually listen to anything but the sounds of my typing or a show that my family is watching. When I do listen to music, I enjoy listening to rock, pop, or alternative. Every once in a while I will find myself listening to video game soundtracks; either music used in the game, or a compilation album of songs written for the game by different artists or bands. I especially enjoy the soundtracks of the "Sonic The Hedgehog" series. I have a compilation album that includes some of the best theme songs from the most popular titles.

I sometimes listen to movie soundtracks that have softer music.

Although I love music and listen to it all of the time, I am unable to write while listening to any type of music because I become focused more on the music than the writing.

When I'm not writing however, I listen to everything except country.  Jazz and Latin are my favorites.

I listen to all types of music, except for Rap. I don't even think of that as music. Thanks for answering.

I love melodies the most. Devotional also is my choice.  I have written a hub on the topic and titled "Music has no language", which is self explanatory and may give you an interesting account of a different societies music interests.

I tend to listen to classical music, as it relaxes me sufficiently without being overly distracting. I have done that with assignments before for university, and found that with the music I often wrote quicker and more coherently.

I rarely write without music on. I can listen to many genres, including easy listening, slow jams, R & B and find them very inspirational. Total silence is deafening to me. I find I get more creative juices flowing with a mixture of things going on.
