Why are some people angry over a multi-racial family being represented in a Cheerios commercial?
The title of the Cheerios commercial is "Just Checking" and a host of negative and astoundingly bad comments followed after it first aired. What's your take?
How ridiculous! We are in the year 2013. All I can say is, people get over it!
Amen brother JThomp! The majority of people agree that what is more shocking is this backwards thinking is still going on in 2013.
JThomp42. Too simply! lol. Look at the 1st time Clark Gable said,"damn". Jim Morrison said," get much higher". Elvis did the hip gyration. Kirk kissing Ogura. We, no doubt, got over that, didn't we? This too shall pass. Much-a-do about nothing.
I have not seen that commercial, but I am surprised to read this question. Why is it so unusual these days that it wouldn't be represented in a commercial? People get upset over nothing sometimes. It's not like it is a question of values. Love is love and it is becoming more common to see multi-racial families.
Some people fear change and/or are just plain ignorant. I have heard the fear of a race or culture dying out when it comes to any mixed relationships. An excuse but again this is an excuse driven by ignorance. Also most of the hatred expressed is online and anonymous and as we have come to see that seems to give license to the bigots, zealots, hatemongers and just plain stupid to spout off.
You are right, most of the people spewing hatred online don't have the guts to say it to someone's face.
I agree, I think negative reactions are a product of ignorance and fear of change.
However we seem to pay more attention, when it involves back and white, but this ignorance is just as deeply ingrained when it comes to crossing cultures and other races.
You are correct Justsilvie, racism is found across more than just black and white lines and also found within ethnicities as well, typically taking the form of fairer is better or somehow more worthy of anything good or great.
Justsilvie. You're right. But black and white comprises such a huge portion of our population, it's only natural to attract attention. That, in itself is discriminatory. The size of the group should have no bearing on it's importance. Nor should race
Makes you really wonder who these hateful people are...

I see many commercials featuring multi-racial couples or families. This is an accepted part of society now and shouldn't be viewed any differently than any other commercial. There was a Kindle commercial that featured a gay, male couple, that many people haven't had the time to accept yet. It's not even legal yet. But that's not an issue to me either. You'll see.
My issue is that if I were involved in either of these relationships, I would be angry with the way these advertising companies are exploiting this issue for the purpose of standing out and selling their product. It's like they have a new "schtick" if you will.
The other thing is they rarely, if ever, depict a white man with a black woman. Is this because most advertising executives are white men? Do they view this differently than a white woman with a black man? I don't know, but it makes me go "Hmmmmmm" Should have put this as separate question, but someone else can if they choose to.
Unfortunately in some areas and circles interracial people and families are not accepted or even tolerated. As for the advertisers, I have not seen anywhere near enough ads to feel that interracial people/families are being exploited or overused.
I have seen this commercial several times and my response was, "oh what a cute little girl! " I missed that her parents were of different colors. My daughter told me about the controversy. Shame on the bigots!
I just watched this on YouTube a couple minutes ago and I thought it was awesome. There are a lot of families in the US who are interracial and I would think it might make them feel good to be represented, too. Unfortunately the backlash might be telling them that they're not good enough or shouldn't be allowed or have no place in society. It's yet another setback for what is supposed to be an advanced society.
Incidentally, it's definitely a feel-good commercial. It made me smile.
Because some people are ignorant and biggotted? That's honestly the best answer I can come up with.
I don't understand it either. I would think that interracial families are becoming more common. However, I think a lot of other folks said it best that ignorance and bigotry are very much present in this day in age.
This thinking is very backwards and counterproductive. Many of the people who are racist would never have the intestinal fortitude to admit it when asked. Yet, online many people become very bold in this regard. Many comments online reflect this.
Because some people have an ingrained, trained mind that is incapable of understanding that there are no "races", but only ethnicity and country of origin differences. All people are people. The "race" card is played for political purposes and overflows into public life. The simple cure is to never refer a person by their "race". If you are American, call yourself an American. Do not refer to yourself or others as hyphenated-Americans. Not African-American, not Cuban-American, not gay-American, not Italian-American. Be proud of your heritage and customs, but do not define yourself or others by them.
The commercial was very cute and heart-warming (and heart healthy) and should be taken as just that...a cute commercial about a cute family hocking a product.
I agree & there are people who refuse to call themselves hyphenated versions of American but private employers, gov't, and others force it upon them. Despite this, some people are proud about their origins & becoming respectful of others as w
I'll take this one step further if you don't mind. I stayed and worked in Toronto, Canada for a time. When someone asked, I told them that I was an American. Not American- Canadian. Lack of hyphen was no problem for me or them.
I've seen the ad. An adorable little girl with Mom & Dad. The gist of the ad is sweet. I may have heard some scuttlebutt reported, in response to the ad.....but basically ignored it and shut it out. I make it a point to protect myself from noise pollution and spend no time trying to understand the blatant ignorance of some. I've much more important, productive things to do with my valuable time.
Smart efforts, but understanding what the real issues are can help a few see that a different person or family is not some insult or threat to them and may even lead to some level of respect or at least tolerance down the line.
Express......all very true...and would be great, in an ideal world. Sadly there are far too many ignorant A$$holes, who simply deserve to be ignored. All the understanding in the world can't change a mind filled with garbage.
Touche. Understanding a racist's motivation can help in changing them...if they will listen or have some motivation. Some will and some won't. It's sad that something as harmless as a cute commercial is seen as a trigger for such random hatred.
It's ridiculous but the good thing is, it helps us know that many in society are still behind in their thoughts. Many of those who complained should come to live in Europe or London for a while and see how Multi-culture is embraced.
Now that would be interesting....
