   The answer depends on your reason for needing the whitening. Some occupations cause staining. When I was gardening and had dirt-stained nails, I had success with soaking my fingernails in lemon juice. However, if the problem is a nail infection (unhealthy yellow), the best way to get them back to a healthy color is to use natural or prescription antibiotics.

      Thank you for the answer. I just like mine to look a little whiter than they are. I've heard peroxide which didn't seem to do much.

   I use baking soda and peroxide for a lot of things, even whitening teeth.  I wrote a hub on it.  It's a natural whitener.  Also, don't forget the white pencil!  My mother used this back in the day, amazing how people forget to use them now.  Get them in any makeup section.  That's for under the nail.  Also vinegar keeps them clean.  I usually do that just before I change my nail polish. 
   
   Tip:  If you wear black nail polish, they will tint, again, peroxide and baking soda.  I have a toothbrush I use just for that.  Use like 2 times a day, should get whiter in a couple of days.

      To keep nails from staining due to nail polish, especially black or red, use a clear coat before the polish.

   The answers given here are very likely to work. You can try toothpaste with baking soda or a whitener in it, apply with a soft toothbrush. Once clean, keep a clear coat polish on nails to avoid staining.
