What is the root of all evil?

The root of all evil is ignorance. Man compares himself to others, then he either wants to feel superior or he feels inferior. Either way the desire is born to be in conflict with others. He does not realize that he is only in a fight with himself, with his own thoughts and feelings. Everything is an illusion based on his thoughts. His whole restlessness to own the world or to dominate others is caused by himself because he has no inner contentment. And it is impermanent. When he becomes an old man, then he realizes that he wasted his time and his life fighting with others.

Beautiful Sri T. Exactly what is taught in Buddhism and Christianity. Ignorance is the separation of Ego. Selfishness. Humility and love are the antidote and cure.

The root of all evil is a bad intension so whenever you think negative about anything you will get negative results so it always depends on whatever you intend to do.

Beautiful, Josh. Even seemingly good actions done with corrupt motivation can lead to more suffering. We have to love our neighbors as ourselves, thinking nothing of the "self" (Ego).

    Ego corrupts all.

Ego is ignorance, separation and selfishness. Ego was borne out of disobedience when we desired to taste the dichotomies of the physical world.

But Ego made us blind. We could no longer see or think. We were caught in a nightmare world of shadow. Then Homo sapiens was born. Again, we could think and see, but it was an imperfect instrument. Because we were still shackled with Ego, everything we did became tainted with the intention of selfishness and separation (evil). Every goodness and act of kindness was laced with the odor of Ego -- goodness for the sake of "self."

Then God sent his messengers to teach us and to help lead us back toward the light of Love (togetherness and facing our responsibilities, rather than wallowing in ignorance of them).

When some say that the root of all evil is the love of money, they are referring to that which does the loving of physical instruments of power -- Ego.

Ego reacts. Those who are most filled with Ego, know how to use this natural reaction to manipulate others, as governments now do to their citizens. Ego is vulnerable and tries to protect itself. Ego will do anything to stay alive, but it is a false self. It can be destroyed; but the true self is immortal and invulnerable.

Ego cannot love, but hungers for the things of lust. Ego cannot take responsibility, but enjoys offering blame. Ego will never be humble, but will, on occasion, commit suicide just to show the world who is right. Ego can never tell the whole truth, but enjoys using truth to promote lies. And Ego can never have faith, but remains fearful of being discovered and remains full of doubts.

Christ said that those who are "first" (egotistical) shall be last (left out in the cold); and those who are "last" (humble) shall be first (welcomed into Heaven).

It is the Id the part of the mind in which innate instinctive impulses and primary processes are manifest, not the ego that needs repressing. The ego gives self-esteem. If we are to love others as self, we first have to love ourselves

I would have to say greed, it is the reason why so many people are suffering.

the Dollar. The root of all evil. The illusion that we are all chasing thinking that this is what we need to live and have a good life. But what is a good life? Under what circumstances is life good? Is it about what we want? Or what we need? Because we don't need much, but seem to want everything, which is pretty hard to obtain, especially when the media does so well at making us believe the idea that to obtain everything is the key to a good life.

Since I choose to believe God rather than call him a liar i must say the "the love of money" is the root of all evil.
    1 Tim  6;10
for the root of all of evil is the love of money, which some while coveted after, they have erred from the faith, and themselves pierced through with sorrows many

Great answer Celafoe.  Many forget the phrase "love of money" when quoting this scripture.  They also tend to forget that the Word of God is always right, no matter who may put up an opinion.

MONEY. Money has torn our family apart. Money inheritances, several have made brothers, sisters, and Mothers fight, stop speaking, back stab, gossip, and the list goes on.

      1 Tim 6:10
10 For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil, for which some have strayed from the faith in their greediness, and pierced themselves through with many sorrows.
