   What causes so many people feel threatened by and have animosity towards those in the
   
   LBGT communities?
   Despite the growing acceptance of LBGT people, there are still those who strongly contend that LBGT people are sexual outlaws.  They further demonize LBGT in covert and overt ways.  There are those who go as far to dehumanize LBGT people.  Each person has to right to live his/her life and to express himself/herself as he/she chooses as long as h/she does not hurt others and the more vulnerable among us.

   I would suggest there are a mixture of things..... fear that it's "infectious."  Fear of a god that will inflict punishment.   Fear that others will laugh at and chastise me if I show any kind of acceptance.   Fear in a superstitious sense.... in the times before scientific inquiry and research, all happenings, whether sickness, injury, hunger, death, lack of rain, draught, storms, earthquakes.... these and others were all attributed to the ire of a god. 
   Attach to this the animal instinct of being afraid of anything that is different and not familiar.... therefore not to be trusted....and add the approval of your peers if you are seen to be "anti-" whatever it is, and you have the reasons people can be so against homosexuality.
   There is very little, if any, rationality about it.... mostly emotion and ignorance.

      My question is why is this a issue, why do people have to fear, why is this so new to people and many disagree ? We hear why you want these rights but why was these rights denied from long ago ? It is like having a baby. No one says you can not ,why?

      I am also confused about the notion that some religious groups have that LGBT is caused by 'demons' or 'demonic possession'. I think these kinds of ideas need to be addressed.

      I think anyone who thinks ANYTHING is caused by demons needs a psychiatrist and fast! 
      
      I am still not sure how to process the depth of homophobia associated with religion (particularly Christianity) that I am witnessing lately.

      I am concerned that so much pro-religious, anti-gay rhetoric comes from people who in other respects are quite intelligent.
      So much of the religious argument is centered upon superstition.  The anti-gay bit is based upon heresay, prejudice, ignorance

   Intellectually crippled politicians once again passed another 'act' that supports "reparative therapy" for LBGTs. What these idiots and others like them fail to understand is that there in NOTHING TO REPAIR! People will always tend to be who they are. When it doesn't fit the cultural "normal", stupid people will try to "cure" them. I don't get it. I never will. People are diverse and have individual rights to be happy. Why can't some people just accept that? Why must they forcibly push their ideas of "normality" on the world? That's like requiring that all houses be the same freaking color and design. Stupid, that's what that is.

      I saw this in Texas. It is unbelievable that the Texas GOP would even bother to engage with such nonsense---particularly when the social "tide" is turning in the US and Americans are increasingly getting it that we are born this way.

      I totally concur with your statement, Austinstar.  Some people are born homosexual, lesbian, etc. There's nothing wrong with LBGT people!  They're HUMAN BEINGS, live and LET LIVE!

   I hear you.
   
   I suspect a few of things:
   
   (1) Hate is easy;
   
   (2) Hate that one can claim is not hate, but adherence to "God's rules" or "teachings" is even easier;
   
   (3) Discrimination is empowering for some people;
   
   (4) Discrimination is even more empowering if you can claim its is not discrimination, but living a "Christian" life and/or working toward bringing gays and lesbians closer to a "Christian" lifestyle.
   
   In other words, it is easy and empowering---particularly when there are few federal laws in place to protect the gay and lesbian community from civil rights infringements.

   I think the biggest driver of this feeling is religious conviction. For me, that is not a good thing because if you're truly spiritual, you should just take care of your own faith life and not judge others. It's also very sad when parents disown gay children. Any discrimination of this type forces many gay people to live a lie, and the victims are women and men who marry gay  people who are trying to live this lie. It's better to be open about these things. In the Philippines I knew of one famous couple where the woman knowingly married a gay celebrity. It works out because they marry with honesty on the table right from the beginning. I believe you should be allowed to love whoever you wish, even if it is someone of the same sex. Faith shouldn't be in the business of condemning, but of loving and accepting.

   gmwilliams, good question. I don't know the answer and have never understood it. I was raised that Christianity should mean tolerance (Methodist church upbringing), but there are a lot of people around that just seem to think their personal religious beliefs give them the right to act like judge and jury of everyone else. Maybe it boils down to some people believe that if they can control the sex lives of others they are great and powerful? In truth only small, insecure people feel the need for such power as that.
