Do you think Obama should send troops to Iraq?
If you answer, please include why you feel the way you do and if you are from America or another country. I personally cant believe that the guy who won an election on a platform saying he would bring our troops home is ending his presidential career by sending troops back overseas but thats just me. I am curious what others think....
I am from the U.S.. My answer is: Absolutely not. Religious wars are wars based on mass insanity. This country should not get involved in any religious conflicts abroad or in our own country. Democracy is worth fighting for - religious beliefs are not. Sectarian wars are the most pathetic (and unholy) of all.
The religious fanatics who start these wars are products of childhood brainwashing. That issue should be addressed before trying to take sides in those religious conflicts.
This is a conflict as old as Islam. Sunni versus Shi'a is no recent development nor is it the product of some political disagreement. It is fundamental to Islamic history.
Kathleen, you are not alone in feeling this way. Too many of our military troops have been sacrificed in the effort to police the world. It is a practice that has gone on for decades, and one that has historically been motivated by reasons that have little to do with protecting our national good. Religious extremists don't want peace; and our politicians know this, and are only too happy to put our troops in the middle of hostilities if there is a chance their corporate buddies (such as big oil) will profit. For all his previous claims of wanting to bring troops home, Obama is no different than his predecessors.
Thanks, Beth. What most people don't realize is that whether Republican or Democrat politicians, both groups aim for the same common goals and both groups serve themselves in the process. We are ruled by the rich few...for now...
This is just the beginning of troops in Iraq, the Vietnam War started the same way. It is ironic that Obama said there is no military solution to the problems of Iraq but sends troops to help Iraq's military against an Al Qaeda backed military operation. One must wonder about his contact with reality.
Far more likely that he will send troops into Uganda to change their cultural attitudes toward homosexuality.
No. War has been going on between the Shiites and Sunnis for a very long time. If Bush W. had not invaded Iraq, the balance between groups within that country would have remained. But, now we have new militants coming into a war ravaged country. If this new group takes over and the country becomes the headquarters for new, anti-American terrorists, then, we will know where our enemy lives and can deal with our enemy as needed.
From what I've heard he is not "putting boots on the ground" despite the pressure that is being placed on him to do so.
I don't think we should go back into an escalated war in Iraq. It was major mistake to do so in the first place. These people have been hating each other for 1000s of years!
Unless we are willing to stay there forever to keep the peace it's only a matter of time that a civil war would breakout once we finally did leave. The only way they'll have peace is through dictatorship.
This country never wanted democracy or freedom!
Anytime you have a situation where (30,000) troops drop their guns, remove their uniforms, and run for the hills from (800) enemy soldiers it ought to tell us that (they) do not believe democracy and freedom are causes worth fighting and dying for!
We've lost 4500 U.S. soldiers the first time around over a 11 year period and have spent over $3 trillion dollars.
If they really wanted democracy and freedom they could have {easily defeated} (800) soldiers! We should NOT spill any more of our blood or drop another dollar over there. At some point a government has to fight it's own battles and we should cut our loses.
It was a mistake to invade in the first place. To send more troops would prove we have learned nothing. You can't force freedom and democracy on people. They have to want it!
i am an Indian and express my reservations for sending troops to Iraq. It will be hot decision and disaster for global economy because of oil price sky rocketing. India is facing shocks of high crude price. USA will use her advanced weapons system and test and place order to Arms manufacturers in USA and , no care for American soldiers will die or suffer.
Arms business is priority and part of national interests of US.
In all Arab nations new regimes will come to power, would be Islamic fundamentalist and middle east will become home of terrorism.USA toppled Saddam and now Iraq will be divided between Shias and Sunnis and Kurds and again Islamic regimes will capture power.
India is in direct competition with China for the energy resources of the trouble Middle East. That is not good news for India.America should be a better friend to India, the world's largest democracy.
We accomplished what we went there to do. Now it's time to come home.

Does Obama own the coming Iraqi Islamic Republic?Obama claimed victory in Iraq. Iraq is teetering on the brink of a civil war that Muslim extremists will win. Does Obama own the collapse of Iraq since he has removed all American troops and declared victory in Iraq?

A little backgroundI am a bit disturbed that our Secy of State sees fit to have American troops play a role as an occupying army not acceding to the request of the host nation, this nation notin a state of war with the US.How do we justify it?Hopefully this article and the position taken by the US...

Most of you know I am very critical of Obama but it looks like he is going to send about 20,000 to 30,000 more troops to Afghanistan which is what needs to be done. At least, that is the rumor on the street. For all of you who support Obama, I'm assuming you will be against this...

President Obama promises to make a major reduction of troop in Iraq within the next two years. But how many of us actually belive that this is going to happen. Not me! I was deployed to Iraq when the war first kicked off in 2003 and thats how long ive been hearing the same story about removing...

Despite what Obama's press secretary might tell you, the only reason that America is leaving Iraq is because of a declaration signed by George Bush saying that America will leave by 2011. Obama insisted upon staying in Iraq, but the Iraqi government has refused to grant US troops immunity for their...

Obama's wars for oil, is this just the latest?Libya, Yemen and now Iraq/Syria - is this just the latest war for oil that Obama is waging? Libyan oil supplies Italy and France, the war there was to protect that flow. Obama destroyed Qaddafi just to replace him with something worse. Is Syria next and...
