What scripture is their to support Evangelism?

It seems just assumed that every Christian is supposed to go out and gain converts. Because I see so many do it so poorly, I thought it would be good to learn what scripture motivates the evangelical here on HP. I use the term "evangelical" in the loose sense not the name of a church group. I hope to be enlightened.

Matthew 28:19 is the one that is quoted at me most often
"Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit,"

Interesting as that is at the very end of Mathew and is really his instruction to the twelve. I guess that gets bootstrapped to mean all Christians should follow this teaching. Hmm. Some should not in my opine. "all the nations" seems instructional.

yes, the context is telling - but it is expanded upon in many of Paul's epistles as well.  I don't recall Jesus ever telling to smack people upside the head and insult them for not falling in line though, like many people seem to practice daily.

JM Jesus said that if they did not want to hear then they should just move on to someplace else.  No, he never did tell them to yell at them or curse or call them names either.

A better question is - what *evidence* is there to support evangelism? To which, the answer is "none". There is no evidence to support the idea of brainwashing others into a cult is a good idea.

I like your handle for here on HP. Sideways conjures up all kinds of notions. Is it opposed to "straightforward"? Anyhow thanks for your answer it is always good to get diverse comments even off the question topic.

"But when the Helper comes whom I shall send to you from the Father, the Spirit of Truth who proceeds from the Father, He will testify of Me. And you will also bear witness, because you have been with Me from the beginning."
    John. 15:26-27
"And you shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you and you shall be witnesses to Me in Jerusalem and in all Judea and Sumeria, and to the end of the world." Acts. 1:8
"But sanctify the Lord God in your hearts, and always be ready to give a defense to everyone who asks you for a reason for the hope that is in you, with meekness and fear." 1 Peter 3:15

I do not know you but will remember your name Robert. A wonderful group of remembrances of scripture. May we all be blessed to love and live them more fully.
