Why do Christians hate gays so much?

Current events are full of reports about Christians trying to limit the rights of gays, and it makes me wonder,,, why? I have heard they say it is because the gays lifestyle violates one of the commandments but there is a lot of behavior that violates one or more of the commandments and I hear nothing about their behaviour. Adulterers, murders, liars, thieves, none of that behaviour is condemned, yet the private activities of people who are not bothering anybody else are subjected to a level of disgust and contempt not shown to any other segment of the population.

We don't. The media highlights the opinions of specific Christian activist groups in order to create the illusion that all Christians think the same way.

Considering the crusades, the inquisition, is it that surprising.  The greater irony is that the issue with gay was written by Paul not Jesus.

I have friends who are homosexuals and it is probably just a handful like WestBoro Babtist who give Christians a bad name.

I am always amazed at such sweeping and disparaging generalizations as this question exemplifies. It is indicative of the bias, prejudice and intolerance that it purportedly condemns.

The word hate now seems to be in vogue to described anyone who may disagree with a given position. Let is vilify those who disagree with us.  Let us make them less than human, so that a condemnation of their position and them is in line with what we want.

I am not a Christian and possess no great respect for such a belief, but such a general condemnation deserves, itself, to be condemned.

The news is about sensationalism. Some of the arguments from Christians may not even be about limiting rights of gays but keeping their rights to not like it or participate. ie. forcing a Christian minister to perform a gay marriage under fear of persecution and/or legal consequences. Some things the outspoken gay right activists scream about are not even supported by others who are gay. I've spoken with people who are gay that do not think its it right to have a Christian ordained marriage performed by a minister. I definitely do not get the argument about adulterers, murders, liars and thieves. Murder and theft are obviously crimes punishable by incarceration. Adultery is considered a crime in some places and lying can be in certain instances. How is this not condemnation? At the very least, even if you get away with any of these, it is frowned upon.

Your basic premise is flawed. You equate being *forced* to violate your beliefs or participate in something you vehemently disagree with by force of gov't, to something someone does of their own free will i.e. Adultery, murder etc.

You have a right to do pretty much anything you want within reason, you DO NOT have the right to use the power of law to compel *me* to participate or support you in it. See how that works?

I can only speak for myself and I will start by saying, I am a stone-cold, hardcore Christian -- and I do not hate homosexuals. Nor do I believe that I am morally superior to homosexuals. As a matter of fact, I have no doubt that I am morally inferior to a great many homosexuals.

I am nothing but a lowly, wretched sinner who just might have a place in Hell reserved  for me.

A Christian, right here and I love gay people and all people for that matter. Christians need to love everyone.

According to Mark who actually knew Him, Jesus had a lot to say against adulterers, divorce, and rich people, but not word one against homosexuals.

Paul didn't like homosexuals enough to speak against them once- or maybe he was talking about prostitutes or pedophiles? Hard to say. He didn't say that Jesus said it though, and none of the other gospels mention it.

Could it be that crusades against homosexuality have more to do with human nature and a fear of otherness than with the will of the divine? Far as I can tell from reading my Bible, that is the case.

Only some Christians have a bias against gay people. I would argue that a growing majority accepts them. I don't think it's a commandment, rather just a passage in the bible about man lying with another man. Basically, a bigot would be a bigot even without religion. Those who project hate towards the LGBT community will find any reason to do it. And, therefore, it is not reflective of all Christians.

There is a difference between opposing the legal redefinition of the term marriage (with accompanying dramatic changes to inheritance, adoption and tax law) and "hate".

There is the interesting question of political classes with additional protections and "rights" over others.
For example, bakers sued for refusing to make a wedding cake but homosexual bakers given the right to refuse to make a cake with a traditional marriage slogan - by the same Colorado Civil Rights commission. Or a Christian printer ordered to make T-shirts and another banners for one side, but homosexual business owners could refuse to make banners for conservative groups.

In these situations, the government is engaging in viewpoint discrimination. It is akin to making a Muslim printer print Charlie Hebdo cartoons on flyers ... but we get another round of discrimination, because no one is asking Muslims to make gay wedding cakes and pro-gay banners.

Only the non-PC group is forced to provide service to those they disagree with, per political classes with extra protections, enforced by threats of bankrupting you if you don't serve them.

That's the source of the anger, the blatant double standard enforced by force of the government.

You said "Adulterers, murders, liars, thieves, none of that behaviour is condemned."  Really?  Part of the problem is extremes.  You either accept or you hate.  If you don't condone, you condemn.  I'm a Christian and it bothers me when people assign feelings to me that I've not expressed.  This in itself is prejudice.
