    "james and The Giant Peach"

Just because I remember my Dad sticking his head out the front door, and seeing me sitting on the porch, in a t-shirt, shorts, flip-flops and baseball cap, with my headphones on and asking me:
    "You enjoying yourself?"

Isn't it wonderful how a book can transport you in time and space? I grew up in a small town but I felt that I was traveling the world when I read a book. Still do.

"little women" by alcott.  full of humanity, so relatable, doesn't spare you from sorrow, but tempers it with compassion.

Matilda by Raul Dahl! Dahl's imagination in his writing is extraordinary. So creative. So fun.

I have a soft spot for Kidnapped by Robert Louis Stevenson which I read as a ten year old. Full of adventure, intrigue and Scottish highland history, it's a thrilling and chilling tale of one young man's fight for his rights.

A few years later I came across The Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde and loved it - but that's a different story altogether!!

Can you believe I've never read either of those and they are classics. I've seen the movies but that's not the same.

Miss Rumphius by Barbara Cooney, about an adventuring single woman who heals her back and finds adventure again after planting lupines. Based on a real story that resulted in the lupines of Maine!

Love Your Forever by Robert Munsch - A new mom cares for her baby, then he cares for her when she grows old and they, as caregivers, sing the same song about unconditional love.

"The Rabbit Catcher and Other Fairy Tales of Ludwig Bechstein" translated and introduced by Randall Jarrell, and illustrated by Ugo Fontana. It was copyright 1962 by the The Macmillan Company, NY, and printed in Italy. I love the story in it called "The Man and the Wife in the Vinegar Jug" all the other stories are great as well ... My father worked all the time down town back then I a never saw him much. But he would always give me the most wonderful books.  This one is full of great tells and stories of human greed, and how God intervenes in peoples lives to correct great wrongs. It just reminds me that because my father could not be with me for long periods of time, he still wanted to teach me great truths about life.

Simply put; John R. R. Tolkein's Lord of the Rings... It is truly a classic battle of Good over Evil and temptation that turns good to evil and touches on the Hidden World that seems ambiguous and significantly cloaked; yet it can be awakened and provides hope against all odds.
Tolkien stated it was indeed a comprehensive "work" for children and adults who still maintained the "child " within...

Your husband would be happy to know that JRR was an (Oxford University) Inkling, as was C.S. Lewis. The first edition of Lord of the Rings was dedicated to C.S.and C.S. Credits JRR with bringing him to Christianity...
