A woman made a line of Barbies for African-American girls. So why is that racist?

I never had a Barbie, but I never wanted one.

I wondered too. What's the big deal? She simply appealed to a Market.

Certainly perpetuates the notion that blond and blue-eyed are the pinnacle of female beauty.

Not precisely racist but hey, it's a piece of plastic.  Who cares if it IS? If the little plastic lassy gets too sassy we can just toss her in the bin along with her friend Ken until they get politically correct.

Ken is already castrated, I think that's punishment enough.

How ironic that someone named "ken" would be so afflicted.

My sister actually has a Barbie collection.  She has numerous brunettes with green eyes.

How can she be racist?  She's not even anatomically correct!

Did you get a load of the Diana Ross Barbie?

Let's see, they have had a Princess Di Barbie, a Barbra Streisand Barbie, an Audrey Hepburn Barbie, etc. What is the difference if they have a black Barbie? It is just a doll.

Just making a black form of a doll is far from racist...don't even know where that came from...

And if you are referring to the comments on the blog...one of them was implying it was racist...one person with many others disagreeing.

They also have Disney Princess Barbies...not all of them are white...

If you read the article it indicates that it came from certain African Americans who took offense to them.

Some people...not all. The woman who designed them is black as far as I know.

I see more racism in some of the comments that in that. Obviously some other blog sent a bunch of people over there to comment and agree with one another.

I didn't read the comments. What was the gist?

  13. Uninvited Writer profile image80
    Uninvited Writerposted 14 years ago

That there is too much racism. One comment that 75% of black women had babies out of wedlock by the time they were 18. They all like hip hop (a black women who commented that she likes country music was voted negative). They should stop "stealing" white icons like Barbie and Santa Claus and create their own. smile ( I especially like that one). That Barbie should come with food stamps.

No doubt Ken has had his share of problems with Barbie and his Landing Gear............ But castrating him? yikes

I've noticed some of his other moving parts are abit sad also. hmm

As far as being racist is concerned: I think his being gay would be more contentious.
