Are same sex marriages necessary?

First of all, religion has nothing to do with this question. It is about giving approval to some unnatural act. It all boils down to sex. Marriage is quite unnecessary for having sex.

The very definition of marriage is to raise a family, comprising of your biological chidren. Adoption is only a choice or an exception. So, do not bring it into this.

I am all for any one's choice of having sex with  anybody/anything or even with open air so long as they don't do it IN the open air! But marriage? Whatever for? What do you need social approval for, anyway? Just live together and/or have sex and be done with it.

Poor Elton John, one of the best ever singers to have walked the Earth.

Okay, since you're reposting, so will I.

It's not social approval so much as legal rights!

In many states gay and lesbian couples are not allowed to share health insurance plans. If one partner becomes seriously ill and his or her family disapproves of the relationship, they can often prevent the other partner from having any say in treatment or end of life decisions, and in some cases even prevent him or her from visiting, even if the relationship has lasted for decades.

These are just a few examples. There are over 1,100 federal laws alone in which marital status is a factor in determining benefits, rights, privileges, and responsibilities.

Let's have the same conversation with the same ten people with the same arguments in the fifth thread this week. I'm sure we'll work this one out THIS time.

Haha, yeah, I know. I just plugging away, hoping to get through to someone, someday. I am probably too optimistic, but hey, Jesus said Do Unto Others As You Would Have Others Do Unto You and not all of the Christians around here choose to ignore the words of their messiah in favor of those of a lawyer who never met Him, and indeed spent much of his early life trying to eradicate His teachings from the planet. Reading some of the words of Jesus's so-called followers, I wonder if Paul hasn't actually succeeded in his original goal, 2000 years after the fact.

What a new and interesting can of worms you have not opened smile

How's about we remember that each and everyone of us are individuals and therefore should all be afforded the same rights etc etc.

Thank the stars I chose to be heterosexual. And there was I, contemplating a life of homosexuality way back when.

Boy ... I sure made the right choice!

We do, we do. You also have the right. Did you not know? I read it on the forum several times. Sexuality is a choice. So I surmise that because I'm heterosexual, I made the right one smile

Marriage has to do with sex, yes. But not the whole part of it. Marriage is a vow to share your life and all that accompanies it with someone else. And yes, This can be done with just a civil union. But Why is it that Hetero's can get married and Homosexuals have to live with something less?

Everyone has exactly the same rights.

kerrygposted 14 years agoin reply to this

Yeah, right. Because marrying someone you have no attraction to just for the financial and legal benefits is going to lead to SUCH a happy, stable marriage.

Can you honestly tell us that if the situation were reversed and you were forced to marry someone of the same sex you would be satisfied with a life of celibacy and/or awful sex and wouldn't be seeking out female companionship (with or without the permission of your "spouse") every chance you got?

They aren't necessary because I believe a civil union will do the job nicely. To alter marriage to fit is offensive to me and my beliefs. Should they have the same rights as a partner would? Absolutely.

          1. kerryg profile image84
kerrygposted 14 years agoin reply to this

Okay, that I can conditionally agree with you about.

In order to avoid a "separate but equal" situation, my preferred solution would be to get rid of marriage as a legal status entirely and have all consenting adult couples get a civil union, with equal benefits regardless of orientation. This would be easy to implement.

Then leave "marriage" entirely to the churches. That way if some churches want to "marry" gay couples (and some do), they will be allowed to do so, and if some don't, they won't be forced to do so.

Don't be ridiculous. The percentage of gays and lesbians in the population has remained remarkably consistent in every society and every historical period where we have data to study. Homosexuals are only about 10% of the population, so they'll hardly make a dent in the human race's ability to breed even if every single gay couple chooses never to have children (which is increasingly less likely thanks to technology such as in vitro fertilization, growing acceptance of gay adoption, etc.)

Well what difference is it to same sex or mixed gender marriage?
What about monogamous marriage as opposed to polygamy?
No marriage = no divorce. OMG the christians just arrived with a cross...see ya.

Same sex marriages are not necessary, as it destroys the reproduction of future generations. My opinion is , if you are looking for sexual satisfaction , you can have it from same sex relations.
