RSS capsule and FeedBurner

    Hi guys,

We recently switched one of my blog's RSS feed to FeedBurner.

It seems that HubPages RSS capsules spit the dummy over the redirect.

My original blog feed URL was http://raisingentrepreneurs.org/blog/feed.

We have set it up to divert to http://feeds.feedburner.com/raisingentrepreneurs/feed, using the FeedBurner FeedSmith plugin for WordPress.

We tested a range of readers -  two of the RSS reader widgets on iGoogle, Thunderbird RSS reader, Google Reader, and the RSS reader on MyYahoo, and they all found the feed with no problems.

However, the HubPages RSS capsule thinks it's not a valid RSS feed.

Please tell me I don't have to go and change the URL in every RSS capsule on all my related  Hubs ...?

and after we answer her question, can we dumb it down so i can learn what an RSS feed is.  I've been wondering but afraid to ask.

I also have trouble producing feedburner feeds in RSS capsules. Not just at hubpages.

Did it work before you switched to feedburner?

Like a dream - not a single problem ever.

But HubPages has been my only problem so far. I am about to start experimenting with a whole lot more as part of promoting my blog, so I will keep  you posted if I hit any further problems.

      P.S. Paul? Any hints?

    *bump*

Now I am really worried. I went to update the RSS URL in one of my Hubs from my former URL to the FeedBurner one, and it instantly displayed the "Overly Promotional" warning.

Take out the RSS feed URL, and the warning goes away.

And no, I don't already have two other links to FeedBurner on that Hub!

It looks like the FeedBurner links in the RSS feed are each being counted separately somehow.

So now I have to choose between having "this does not appear to be a valid feed" displaying, or having the feed articles there but tolerating a big fat warning sign whenever I visit my Hubs, or just removing the RSS feeds from all my Hubs (not a good idea from SEO and traffic point of view).

Guys, what is the solution here? Surely HubPages and FeedBurner can be made compatible?

You would think.  I have encountered this before, too.  I guess I should have asked back then, but I just stopped using the Feedburner feed.

Can you still use your blog's direct feed, or not?

Jenny, I would be glad to help, but I don't know sad

I hope Paul or Maddie will clarify...

The direct feed works, but I can't use it when I have a diversion in place to FeedBurner.

I may need to set up a mirror blog, use RSS-to-blog to populate it, and use that one instead. It just seems insane to have to do that.

FeedBurner is BIG, which means HubPages really should work with it.

I'm having the same problem. All my Feedburner RSS feeds to my blogs used to work, but now they don't. Should this be reported as a bug?

That's what this thread is doing - reporting it as a bug.

You could try emailing as well, because I haven't seen any comment on this issue from Paul or Jason, so they may have missed the topic.

I set my hubs up with feedburner from the start and all was well. Everything worked. It all fed nicely.

I've noticed in the last week or so (not been checking too frequently) that now my feeds are not valid.

Therefore from my position I'd say this is a hubpages issue.

I have the same problem - I found that the feedburner RSS feed worked fine initially- for when I initially posted the hub and several hours later - now its gone - with the wrong format message in the RSS capsule

I may have solved this problem.  If you're still having trouble please send me a link to a hub that has currently broken RSS feed that you think should work.  Thanks!

The RSS feed I use as an example in my Hub

    http://hubpages.com/hub/How-To-Use-An-RSS-Feed

is still not working properly, and hasn't since we switched it to FeedBurner.

Other RSS readers don't have a problem with it - only HubPages.

Ok, I see the problem there.  The URL you used in the capsule:

      http://raisingentrepreneurs.org/blog/feed/

      redirects to this url:

      http://feeds.feedburner.com/raisingentrepreneurs/feed

The code we use to fetch the RSS will not follow redirects.  We may fix this eventually, but there is an easy work around  -- just use the second url in the RSS capsule.

Thanks Paul, that's right - that is the problem I was reporting. RSS capsule not following redirects.

This means that any time any RSS feed used by any person in any Hub changes to FeedBurner, it will become invalid. And we are not notified when it happens - I only noticed because someone left a comment on my RSS Hub. I saw the "invalid" error when I went to the Hub respond to the comment. Otherwise, I would never have known the feed had stopped working.

It also means that unless people are very IT literate, they will simply be unable to use FeedBurner redirect feeds in Hubs, because they won't know how to track down the FeedBurner URL to make the capsule work.

If there is no fix coming, I now need to go back through 44 Hubs related to that topic, because I can't remember how many of them and which ones actually use that feed, and check them all manually, and change the ones that use it.

I was hoping not to have to do that.

How long is it likely to be before the RSS capsule can deal with redirects?

    Jenny
