Runescape 99 Mining Guide

Updated on March 9, 2013

RS Junkie's Runescape 99 Mining Guide

Well mining is one of those skills that is quite tedious, but once you have finally achieved 99 in the skill, all of your effort and troubles feel very much worth it. In my opinion, the cape is the nicest looking in the game. The blue trim makes this cape look amazing, so it is very much worth getting 99 in this skill simply for the cape in my opinion. 99 Mining can make you a ton of money if you choose to take a method where you make more money, but generally if you want to get to level 99 mining as fast as possible, you will be making next to 0 money simply because you will be dropping your ores. Once you get to 99 mining however, you can start to mine Rune or other profitable ores which will start to make you a lot of money.
I am making this guide the very first day the new Dragon Pickaxe is being released, so this guide will actually include a few words about the Dragon Pickaxe.

_________________________________________________________

Pickaxe Levels
Level 1- Bronze/Iron Pickaxe
Level 6- Steel Pickaxe
Level 21- Mithril Pickaxe
Level 31- Adamant Pickaxe
Level 41- Rune/Inferno Adze Pickaxe
Level 61- Dragon Pickaxe

___________________________________________________________

Starting Off
Well before you start I would highly recommend buying all pickaxe's up to Rune. This is because a lot of the Pickaxes take a while to sell in the Grand Exchange, so it's nice to have your offers in the Grand exchange before you start off. After you have these, start out with the Iron Pickaxe and go to the South-East of Varrock.

__________________________________________________________

Level 1-15- Tin/Copper Ore
-Bring Along: Iron/Steel Pickaxe
From level 1-15 you should grab both your Iron pickaxe and your steel pickaxe and head to the mining spot to the South-East of Varrock. You can find the Tin/Copper ores towards the southern part of this mine. What you want to do is simply click on the ores until you have successfully mined the ore, and then move on to the next rock and begin to mine that one. Once your inventory is full, you want to drop all of your ores since they are worth next to nothing and are not worth running to the bank. Repeat these mining steps until you have reached level 15 mining.
____________________________________________________________

Level 15-45- Iron Ore
-Bring Along: Mithril/Adamant/Rune Pickaxe
From level 15-45 you should start mining Iron ore. There are a few different spots to mine the ore, but the best one is to the North-East of Ardouge. You will want to run to the east first and follow the little road up towards the Legends guild. You will come to the mine with the bears in it and you should see a little area where you can stand where you are directly next to 3 different Iron ore rocks. Simply stand in the middle of these 3 rocks and alternate the rocks which you are mining. Once your inventory is full again, you should drop all your rocks. An alternate way of dropping ores is to get a full inventory and then drop the first 3 from the top left going downwards. That way you drop the 3 ores as you mine them and don’t have to spend a long time dropping. Once you have reached level 45 mining in members you can stop mining iron.
If you are a NON-MEMBER, then you should be staying at the iron mine until you are level 99. There is no better experience for mining in Non-members than Powermining iron, and therefore it is the preferred method. An alternate way of mining for a slight profit is to begin mining Coal in the Mining guild which allows you to bank in Falador west bank and make profits from the ores that you mine.

Level 45-99- Granite Rocks
Bring Along: Rune Pickaxe/Dragon Pickaxe
Well now that you have reached level 45 mining, the fastest experience you can get in members is to mine Granite rocks. In order to do this, you should go to the Shanty pass with 200 gp, Waterskins, your pickaxe and desert clothing. Then you should take the Carpet to Bedabin camp and begin running south to the mine. Once there, there are a few different spots where you could mine. Just look for the best spot that is open in that world or world hop to a world where there a few different rocks really close to each other. With the respawn time of the Ore inside this rock, you will only need to mine 3 ores before the first one respawns again. Keep doing this until you have reached 99 mining! This is pretty straight forward, so there isn't a whole lot to explain. Since this guide would be a little bit too short if i simply left it here, I will also include a section on how to make money mining.

How To Make Money Mining
Bring Along: Your best Pickaxe
Well in order to fully enjoy all the work you are putting into getting 99 mining, it is a good idea to mine for a little bit of cash once in a while. There are a couple different ways to make money mining depending on your level mostly.
Mining Runite
The first method for making money is to mine Runite Ore. This ore sells for 10,000+ each ore, and therefore it is an extremely profitable ore. The only unfortunate thing about it is that the Runite Ore rocks are usually almost completely mined out since many people like to mine these rocks, and it has an extremely long respawn time. If you want to mine rune, the best spot to do it is either in the Heroes guild or in the deep level wilderness.
Mining Coal/Mithril
The other major method I would recommend for gaining money mining is to mine in the Mining Guild in Falador. What you must do here is bring along your best pickaxe for your level and mine Mithril/Coal. The mithril takes a while to respawn, so once all the rocks are mined then you should begin mining the coal. Once your inventory is full, you can run up the ladder and run to the Falador West bank in order to bank your ores.

Misc. Tips

Well mining is actually pretty straight forward. This is a skill where you must pay attention in order to gain proper experience, so this should not be done if you cannot pay 100% attention to Runescape. Most people get bored from this skill quite quickly however, so I would suggest finding another skill that is quite tedious such as Runecrafting and alternating between them as you get bored of them. That way there is a little break from simply clicking and dropping your ores. Other than that, the new Dragon Pickaxe was released today, and this is a major thing for any Runescape Miners. Up until now, the Rune/Inferno Picks were the two best to use meaning you couldn't mine quite as fast. Now that the new Dragon Pickaxe has been released, you will be able to mine certain ores faster which will mean more money or experience every hour!

Mining Spots
Well to the right I have added pictures of all the different mining spots that I have mentioned in the game except for the Mining guild. This will help you identify where the different spots are, and this will also help you find all of the different spots on the mini-map. I listed them in order of when I was speaking about them. Just read the little captions underneath if you are interested in seeing which mining spot is which and what type of rocks are at these different mining spots. They do not really provide a large map so you can see exactly where they are in proportion with everything else, but I believe that it will do a good enough job with the description. If you have any further questions about spots, feel free to leave me a comment and I can get to it.

Conclusion
Well mining is one of those skills that will take you quite a while to achieve likely. Most people do not have the patience to keep mining the different ores, but if you do then you are much ahead of the game. Getting to 99 mining using my outlined guide will leave you with 0 money. That is because all methods of mining that I mentioned are powermining methods and not ways to make money. If you are looking to make money while gaining experience, you should check out my section about making money. This is the best way to make a bit of money while still gaining mining experience. Since the Dragon Pickaxe update, mining coal has become much faster, and therefore mining coal at the Mining guild in Falador might be a good way to gain experience since the mining rate of Coal has increased.
Just kind of play around or use a combination of money-making and power training in order to get to level 99 as fast as possible, or with as much money as you want. I wish you all the best of luck at getting to your mining goals!
