What's more important to you, quantity of life or quality of life?

   What's more important to you, quantity of life or quality of life?
   
   It seems like everyone is only concerned with living longer. Quality of life issues (especially at old age) aren't often discussed. Would you want to be kept alive even if your body couldn't function anymore?

   Definately quality. I can't think of anything more miserable than living to a great age and being bored out of my skull because life was a drag.

   Quality. I'd rather die young doing the things I enjoy, rather than grow old and be miserable because I didn't take any risks or eat the occassional junk food.

   I spent the evening visiting with a friend who has terminal cancer. His life is coming to an end but even now his main concern is quality not quantity. He said that if chemo would cure his cancer he would suffer the agony and continue treatments but since, according to his Doctors, he will only extend his life by a few weeks at the cost of tremendous suffering from the side effects of chemo he has decided to end his treatments. He would, without hesitation,  trade quantity for quality. I understand his choice and I believe I would make the same one.

   I'm with quality. I would rather die at a younger age than live longer in utter misery. I am not afraid to die.

   quality of life. living without dignity beyond my ability to take care of myself, anad having Alzeimers Disease is my greatest fear. I want to die before I reach the stage where I can no loger recognize family members, remember my past or  understand what is hapening around me.

    There is a trade-off between the two sometimes, and they are inseparable at times. Quality of life seems most important to me on the surface, but quantity of life allows you to have more quality life. You see the dillema, and it varies for every situation. For example, I wouldn't jump out of an airplane without a parachute at age 20 just so I could have excellent quality of life (assuming I considered that "excellent quality", which I personally don't) for a short period of time. I also wouldn't want to be kept alive on lifesupport for 20 years if I were unconscious and unable to communicate with anyone. It's the inbetween cases that are gray areas for nearly everyone: each situation is unique so I will have to wait to tell you my real answer when it comes to that decision.

    Quality of life is of the utmost importance to any thinking human being. Such people want to live at their most optimum level. If they are unable to do so, no matter what age, they would rather die than to not to live independently and/or on their own terms.  The thought of depending upon others horrifies such people.  They want to be independent as long as they can and when they cannot, they would rather die than to live a lesser life.
    
    However, there are others who want to live a long life, regardless of the quality. They believe that they have the preordained right to live as long as possible. Even if their functioning is no longer at the optimum level, they still want to live.  To them, life is life regardless.

    Quality of course.  Who wants to live when one is barely existing & cognizant of his/her surroundings.   Smart people want to live a FULL life, not just be merely alive.
