Spook, we were just talking about Richard Prior, laughing at some of his jokes. Err...who is George Carlin? Forgive me, I'm an ignorant Brit. Don't think he's made it over here. Maybe I should look him up.

Richard Pryor was hilarious, no doubt about that. Carlin was this old hippy guy that liked to use foul language and developed that knack into quite an art.

I have to go with Carlin. He had his material down pact and on such a variety of subjects. Pryer was funny but in a scary improv-your-messed-up-life sorta way... which has its charms.... Nope, still have to go with Carlin.

Carlin was genius with great timing, and his examinations of society and behavior was very sharp.

i know you dont want this type of answer,... but i honestly cant choose between them. carlin is one of my all time favorites,.. the guy that built the road that robin williams would break the speed limit on,... he did satire in a way few had before or since,................. but pryor,... omg,... so multi talented,.. his movies with and without gene wilder,... just awsome.

pryor had satire that delivered laughs at break neck speed and a moral lesson on the back side,... he could make you laugh your ass off and think deep,... when you were done laughing you left a better person because of what he made you think about.

carlin,... oh jeeze,... his satire was sharp, hit hard and had no apologies in it,... none what so ever,... he told you exactly how twisted society was and then threw in a round loud "f**k you" in your face for kicks,.... he made you laugh your ass off at the human race and american society with full knowlege that you were part of the same screwd up group.

the overall difference between pryor and carlin was carlin had a true gallows humor,... while pryors humor had tears and hope in it,.... carlin loved pointing out the stupidity that he saw as human nature,.... pryor pointed to the wrongs in life in a funny way, hoping the world would change if it could laugh together at itself.

carlin laughed at a world he had given up on (at least in his act) and pryor laughed at a world he thought could get better.

carlin was resignation,.... pryor was hope.

    i cant choose,

Those are very good descriptions of those two guys; very accurate. Well, I like them both, I guess that's why I chose them here; both groundbreaking, both rightfully legends of comedy; genius in their illuminations of that from which we hide.

George Carlin. I've always been a fan of his and enjoy listening to him more than Richard Pryor.

I would definately have to go with George Carlin.  His routine was always so right on the spot, loved the way he could always find a humorous slant in society.  He had a special gift, the best part was that as you listened to him, you would find yourself nodding your head in agreement.
