OBAMA AND REAGAN A COMPARISON OF CONTRIBUTIONS

Updated on October 14, 2010

INTRODUCTION

Fellow Hubbers and other readers I will compare the contributions of our current president Barrack Obama with those of a past president Ronald Regan. President Barrack Obama was born on August 4, 1961 in a place that is still in question. He is the 44th President of the United States of America. President Ronald Wilson Reagan (February 6, 1911 – June 5, 2004) was born in Tampico, Illinois. He was the 40th President of the United States of America.

Beside being the chief executive of our nation these two men had something else in common and in this Hub I will explore that common ground.

RONALD REAGAN

Ronald Reagan began as a Liberal Democrat who supported the policies of FDR and his New Deal. By the election of 1952 although Reagan remained a registered Democrat he was beginning to see the errors of his way of thought and supported Dwight D. Eisenhower in his successful presidential run. Reagan remained a Democrat through the 1950’s until 1962 even though he supported Ike in his reelection bid in 1956 and Richard Nixon in his failed bid against JFK in 1960. His transformation made him a natural supporter of Barry Goldwater, the father of modern conservatism, in his 1964 run for president against LBJ

During the 1950’s while working for GE on their TV series he made many speeches for GE, which he wrote himself. These speeches were non-partisan but carried a conservative, pro-business message. Reagan began to be known for his tough stance against unions and championed the core tenets of modern American conservatism which included free markets, anticommunism, lower taxes and limited government.

Ronald Reagan entered into active elective politics with his sucessful bid for Governor of California in 1966 and serveed two terms from 1967 through 1976. He brough his winning personality into the political arena with him convincing Californians of his common sense conservative approach to governance. After the dismal, malaise presidency of James Earl Carter, Reagan elevated his game to the national scene with his message of hope and change which he called “Morning in America”. With this event Reagan the follower of the father of modern conservatism became the transformative figure, which had eluded Goldwater the father and a new conservative star was born in Reagan.

Reagans message of hope and change had very positive results for the American people due to the common sense of his conservative approach. This, in my humble opinion, made Reagan the best president of the 20th Century!!!!!!!!!!!!

BARRACK OBAMA

Barrack Obama like Ronald Reagan began as a Liberal Democrat who supported various Liberal causes during his day as a community organizer as the director of the Developing Communities Project (DCP) on the South Side of Chicago from June 1985 to May 1988. During his three year tenure at the (DCP) his budget rose an astounding 419% in 2010 dollars from $141,564 to $735,648. This 5.2 times astounding increase in spending over the short period of three short years did not bode well for the future transfomation that Reagan had undergone in the 1950. Obama’s subsequent service with various Liberal groups and causes proved he had not learned the lessons of common sense consevatism that Reagan had learned in the 1950’s and confirmed with his conversion to the conservative cause with his party change in 1962 and support of Gold water in 1964.

During the early 1990’s while at The University of Chicago Law School as a Visiting Law and Government Fellow Obama wrote his first book. He then served as a professor at the University of Chicago Law School for twelve years. He was a Lecturer from 1992 to 1996, and a Senior Lecturer from 1996 to 2004 teaching constitutional law. During this same time period Obama continued to pursue his Liberal interests with various groups the most notewothy being the Chicago Annenberg Challenge of which he was a founding director. During Obama’s tenure at Annenberg noted 1960’s radical William Ayers co-authored Chicago's winning Annenberg Challenge winning a $49.2 million grant. Once again Obama’s liberalism did not change as Reagan’s had but continued to grow in its radicalism.

Barrack Obama’s entry into elective politics began in 1997 with his election (selection?) to the Illinois State Senate a position which he held until 2003. During this time he lost a bid to enter the U. S. House of Representatives by a 2 to 1 margin in the 2000 Primary Election. In May 2002, Obama commissioned a poll to assess his prospects in a 2004 U.S. Senate race. He created a campaign committee and lined up political media consultant David Axelrod by August 2002, and formally announced his candidacy in January 2003 and a new 21st Century radical liberal political star was born with his election in 2004. Obama took his seat in the U. S. Senate in January of 2005 and by February of 2006 announced his candidacy for President of The United Stares of America.

Obama much like Reagan used the message of “Hope and Change” to mesmerize the American electorate. Unlike Reagan, Obama’s “Fundamental Transformation of America” has resulted in his governing with radical liberal policies of unlimited government control, debt and spending. This, in my humble opinion, made Obama the worst president in my lifetime now surpassing James Earl Carter for that distinction!!!!!!!!!!!!

CONCLUSION

The study of Barrack Obama and Ronald Reagan is an interesting endeavor since it is an illustration of similarities and differences. First a similarity, both began as Liberal Democrats but in contrast Reagan had a mind of his own and learned better while Obama is more robotic and not strong in leadership.  Obama is most likely not the leader but a follower of some shadow figure’s agenda!!!!!!!!!!!

I do find the main similarity to be that both are boons to conservative governance. Reagan boosted conservatism by his common sense solutions!!!!!!!!!!!

Obama boosts conservatism by negative example.  His radical liberal policies have awakened a sleeping giant as shown by the Tea Party movement!!!!!!!!!!

There is a generation that never knew Reagan and some folks who did know him but have forgotten. Now they have seen the outcome of Obama’s liberal policies and by this contrast conservatism is boosted by both Obama and Reagan equally!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
