To put it most simply, because although there are good people in the world, we also share it with the bad and ugly. Also, it may be that some have personally experienced or sympathize with others who want to shed light onto some wrong or different set of standards and have that wrong or set of wrongs righted. However, there have been historic examples of the "righting" of certain wrongs being done with good intentions and lackluster results. Life would be so much easier if each person could do unto others...
Sorry, but I hv no clue as how your response answers the above question.
I stated that sometimes people must fight for equality simply because there are people in this world with different, negative motives & actions. Ie: if you have bad neighbors encroaching into your life, would you not give some type of push back?
"sometimes people must fight for equality"
Specifically, who are these "people" who hv fought for "equality"?
BTW, please don't tell me about the "people" the DEMs have carved out in America . . .and pitted against white Christian males.
Many people, women, dozens of races and nationalities, disabled, and others to name a few. Also, why are you so hostile? Who has hurt you?
You will have to try again @Express10, all those groups you mentioned aren't white, male Christians. What you listed are part of the class that largely supports the kinds of things 'D's believe is right and moral, e.g., individualism and equality.
Why do you need the herd? Who are you? Can't you stand on your own? Where is your power? Only weak people hide in the herd. All the groups are illusions. You are alone. You're born, you live and die alone. Like everybody. Neither higher or lower.
If one reads they'll see I answered a question whether they agree or not with my answer. What's with the preoccupation with white Christian males and S Leretseh's hostile/angry comments on various answers to this question? Ah, trolls.
Sorry, That question was for S Leretseh. He keeps speaking about white christian males.
The problem is clearly them. Funny, I ask 2 questions & S Leretseh is suddenly unavailable when they were quite available to say rude or snippy comments to various people's answers here & MyEsoteric sloppily attempts to continue the silliness
lol @ S Leretseh - Buddy goes around with donkeyish comments, ill mannered but does not answer the question. Gotta love the haters ... LOL
I really don't know why but it's a shame. So many racist and sexist people in the world for sure. R.I.P. to the great Mr. Nelson Mandela.
If white Christian males returned to subsistence farming in America...all that we interpret as racism and sexism would become moot - DISAPPEAR. Yes, as much chance of that happening as the concept of equality becoming a reality
You should drop the word Christian. Your views have nothing to do with their teachings, which is love your fellow men.
I think the words white and christian and males should be dropped. Inequality, in its essence exists, in all walks of life and has to do w/ strong vs weak.
I could not agree more Lesliebyars and Mklow1.
As long as some people chose oppression over understanding, love and compassion, some people will have to fight for equality.
Since cavemen, humanity has been driven by greed. The battle is for the easy life. The world is territorial as a result of that. Technically speaking, nobody owns the earth, just like nobody owns the sun or the moon or any of the planets. This concept of owning the earth has been enforced by countless wars throughout history. The winner of the war determines who will have the better life and who will not.
People here clearly do not know how to answer the above question. Equality is nothing more than a concept. Before 1960s, Equality meant equality before the law. In the 60s it had changed to integration rights (polti & econ)for blacks; then femal
You are looking at the surface. The core of the matter is gain, greed. The people in the Amazon jungles are equal too. Its a world view, not just American. Your profile says it all. If you are racist just admit it. Don't lie to yourself.
"The people in the Amazon jungles are equal too" REALLY? Females there are "equal" to the males? Still waiting for someone here to define "equality"
Not in the appearance or posessions, but as humans. Nobody is better than anybody.
So ALL society's titles/status symbols (president, CEO, Mayor, Governor, etc.) must be eliminated, as they convey superiority, and therefore inequality. RIGHT? And how about the people who have more $$...and can eat "better" food? food should equal?
Amusing. If they are still living 200 years from today, I will be impressed. If we have to look for them in the cemetary, I guess they were not all that superior.
Sri T, I thought u answered this very well and very simply.
No one has to fight for equality they choose to. Anyone can be anything they want if they put forth the effort.
That would be true if life was all about economics and social stature. It would also prove that God is just a tool if all men are not considered equal in his eyes, having to choose to fight exploitation. No wonder everyone is trying to get nukes
I wish what you say is true, @AuthorCheryl, but it isn't. For example, do you truly believe poor Americans are so lazy that only 3 in 10 make it from the lowest 10% to the highest 50%? That the other 7 choose to stay below the median?
It's the only way to free yourself from those who want to enslave / control / dictate to you and your way of life. There will always be those who will feel better about themselves when they are standing on the necks of others.
To give you the scientific answer, its because we are biologically wired through hundreds of thousands of years to place a higher value on people with similar genetic profiles to us. That's not specifically racial, but of course race is strongly correlated with genetic heritage. Today we have intellectually turned against this, but its such a deep part of our make up that it isn't that easy. Research has shown that even people who have strong moral passions against racism and for equality still harbour subconscious prejudices which are in direct contrast to the way they see themselves and the way they want to be, but which operate at an instinctive level without the person even realising what they are doing. And of course some people have no inclination to check themselves and just embrace their base nature instead. Its a tough cookie to crack, that's for sure.
I agree, but I'd point out that we're also biologically wired for empathy. It's just that historically that empathy has been given only to those like ourselves. I think we are growing beyond that. Slowly, but we're working on it.
I certainly have to agree with Mrs. Manning: we are also wired for empathy, compassion and understanding. Just because our ancestors may have lived in caves and banged their fists on their chests, we do not have to. Awareness is changing our "nature"
Equality is one of the most valued relationships. Equality is the foundation of egalitarianism. Egalitarianism is the foundation of social justice. Social justice leads to happiness.
Equality among human beings is a constructed assumption. The reason is that, in fact human beings are not equal with regards to many aspects like weight, height, intellect, age, strength and many more.
WOW conrad... Your response seems to be taken right out of Karl Marx's communist manifesto. Equality=egalitarianism = "From each according to his ability, to each according to his need" BEWARE PEOPLE...die hard communist are still among us...
L Leretseh, I have not read Marx manifesto. Did he say anything about social justice? to return your compliment, I thought Joe MacCarthy is already gone. That communist bugaboo is passe, the US is allied with China, France where there are communists.
Interesting, Equality = Communism, spoken like a true Conservative.
Okay esoteric, why don't you be the first here to define what "equality" means.
conrad, what is "social justice"? Funny phrase. Please define.
L Leretseh, encyclopedia britannica or encarta, even wikipedia will save you from being lost in defining social justice. Or go to papal encyclicals. May be I must level down the definition I have given in my first post but not enough space here..
Yes, there are good people and bad people, for sure. But, even among good people, there is a distinct difference of opinion as to whom should have rights and to what degree. For example, Edmund Burke, founder of modern day conservatism and member of Parliament a couple of centuries ago, in his writings stated clearly and unabashedly that for society to work in good order, there must be different classes of people.
In his time it was the political (with the most rights), professional, and common (with the least rights) classes. He did not believe this in any mean or disingenuous way; it was simply his belief that a separation of classes is necessary and each has its own set of rights, with the commoners getting the least because they needed the most protection from the political class. That belief was, and is, held by Conservatives in the years since, leading to the delay in emancipation and women's vote in America.
Because that's life. In the Western world, we like to think that everyone should be fair... meanwhile, we're cheating our employer of time because he supposedly isn't... that is just one of many examples of how childish we are, even though we ourselves rarely have pure hearts and pure motivations. In some ways this is a distinctly western, dare I say, American belief...That all people are good and fair and compassionate. Yet this belief does not coincide with reality. (By the way, dictators love that we are so gullible) The reality is that people are not always as good as we think they are "supposed" to be." So the sooner we figure this out, the sooner we can sometimes right wrongs the old fashioned way--through work, practicality, and savvy--and in having enough character to stay the course and use our hands and minds to make changes, instead of whining about the injustices of life.
I think it all has to do with prejudice and greed and the sinful hearts of some men. Some people are evil.
There will be different opinions about what is equality? Until every person can walk in the shoes of their fellow man and understand that equality is the bedrock of human civility. We will always need to rage, rage, against the darkness. Equality comes a huge responsibility to see right and wrong from all sides. There will not be a change in hearts or minds, until we understand where and on what thinking (logic) we form our opinions.
"is the bedrock of human civility" -Doesn't one first need to define equality ? The rest of your comment...I'm lost.
Because this is far from being a perfect world currently and until a long time away. There exists in-equality in kinds of aspects, even between men and women, in human society, and humans do have various feelings and needs, then struggle.
So that they can assert their rights, individuality and express their beliefs.
Why do people have to fight for equality?
Just take Asian women for our discussion. In some countries, women are strikingly under-represented in the labour force. Relatively few are entrepreneurs. Even in modern societies, business practices are backward when it comes to equal opportunities in the work-place. Although there are often equal numbers of men and women at entry-level, the number of women at senior and board-level is still shockingly low. In terms of remuneration, women are generally paid less for identical jobs. It is partly due to business mind-set. We will refrain from discussing the various reasons here.
Back at their own home, it is still a struggle for these women folks. They are still the mother with primary childcare responsibilities, and often have to juggle the demanding conflicts of work and family to ensure success in their careers. The writer knows of some Asian families still heavily bound in traditions. Although women folks are increasingly sharing the burden of raising families, their financial burden gets heavier with rising inflation. Asian husbands still enjoy unearned privileges so much so that, over time, some wives actually think of their husbands as a liability. These privileged males enjoy a game of golf or after-work drinking sessions with buddies. The working young mothers had to rush home from work to prepare dinner for family members. In extended families, these working mothers are subject of parents-in-laws' whims and fancies, such as single-handedly doing after-dinner kitchen clean-up while other family members enjoy their television programs. If we do not hear of such cases, it does not mean they do not exist. How do these women folks fight back against such discrimination? Married ones choose not to have children of their own. They generally do not live with parents-in-laws under the same roof. Others remain unmarried and generally successful in their working lives.
These cases may not be representations of Asian families of today, but they are reasons why some people (Asian women) have to fight for equality of rights and privileges their own way. This topic is highly debatable so what is said is just the writer's own observation.

Okay, so "equality" in asia = the complete eradication of gender mores-that have existed throughout human history? INTERESTING.
You have given a real life example of why these women should fight for equality inside and outside the home and family.
They don't!
Inequality is an evil perpetrated by ego.
Best that we "resist not evil" in any form. This is the power position of spirit which is above all such "traps."
This is a beautiful answer if we're sitting around a fire place, drinking hot chocolate and philosophizing. When I hit the streets though and I see homeless people sleeping on subway vents begging for food inequality becomes pretty obvious. Cheers!
... because nobody is meant to be inferior compared to others. We are all created the same. When we die, the same worms eat us up so why allow ourselves to be treated unfairly?
People have to fight for equality because we live in a world of inequality... Some people are richer... Some are more powerful... Some people are more snobbish... Generally, those with greater control of resources like land and money dominate others, and as a result, the subjugated are forced to fight for their rights.
Throughout history, the wealth of certain people has been based on the exploitation of others. So when people fight to improve their conditions, it threatens the wealth and status of those who are better off.
in the past it was due to unfair treatment. today equality is a joke in this country. equality now means the most popular group in the culture get unfair advantages over others. why do people have to fight for it? because when the most popular group doesn't get their way, others suffer for it. we live a very self centered me, me ,me type society. people don't take rejection, punishment, or the idea of having to work your way up well. i cant comment on others in other countries because i dont live there. so who knows exactly whats goin on in other area's besides what our news tells us.
Social stratification. We are born into parents who are either rich or poor - have high status in the community and some have to fight for it. Actually in reality we are not born equal, but there should be equal footing once we are born, sadly it is not, we are born into a world created by people before us and the society we are in including our family, education, government, economy and church.
Equality is one of the three great words related to the French Revolution, two others being, liberty and fraternity. French Revolution occurred in the year 1789 and the slavery was abolished in the US in the year 1865. In 1910 South Africa got Independence from the oppressive apartheid rule. There is a gap of 76 years between the French Revolution and the abolition of slavery in the US ; and 45 years between abolition of slavery in the US and extermination of apartheid in South Africa. One can measure the torture and humiliation faced by one section of human society from this long span of time. It is also evident that though in one part of the world, people were being made awake of the principle of equality and other basic human values, the people in other part were still being tortured and exploited on the basis of their color. While some people were bent on maintaining status quo, others were struggling to stamp out all streaks of inequality from the face of the earth. It is due to their persistent and brave struggle that the humanity is vibrating with such equality in the present day. When some humans treated co-humans worse than animals , how could the sensible among them have remained mute for long ? It was not only the oppressed but some enlightened ones also who ignited the fire of equality in the masses. It was a long struggle starting from unsung heroes of the past to the genre like Mahatma Gandhi and Great Nelson Mandela. Though a war has been won for equality, battles are still remained to be fought ;wherever in any part of the world, streak of inequality exists ,whether in physical form or in the psyche of the people. Till notions of discrimination on the basis of one's color, race, creed, caste, country, social status, religion, etc. remain in the human psyche and conduct of any streak of society, people have to fight for equality.
Because the entity you have to fight thinks it is a zero sum game, and if you become an equal it becomes a lesser. They may not know that this is what they are thinking, but it is. They are trying to ensure their security. In the case of apartheid South Africa you will note that security was the issue that justified that system of inequality.
For the people who were the creators of S. African society (English, Christian males), there ws best that could be achieved by man in ensuring all people - of the SAME group - get equal treatment under the law. Prior to 1964 integration ws unknown
It is all about upbringing. Some families are teaching the right value between people while others may not. There should be no differences between all human beings. We are alike as humans therefore we should teach and convey the right messages for all our children and future generations.
The cause for fighting against inequality is nothing, but the practicr or existance of inequality. The ultimate solution for this evil is the revolution in the mind of the people

Because it is so controversial throughout American history it might be useful to discuss what makes a TRUE conservative. Among many others, the philosophical pillars of conservatism are Edmund Burke (1729 - 1797), Russell Kirk (1918 - 1994), and William F. Buckley Jr. (1925 - 2008)Russell Kirk in...
