Why didn't we hear about post traumatic stress from WW2 & Korean war soldiers?
The casualty rate amount WW2 and Korean war soldiers was extremely high, around 50%, in addition soldiers those days, have no armour making them more vulnerable, considering it was total war, an entire generation of people fought in those wars, yet, there seem to be fewer reported case of post traumatic stress disorder from those soldiers, in term of ratio. Were men back in those day, just more hard core, use to that sort of thing or they just kept it bottle up?
Because it used to be called "shell shock" or "war fatigue," and wasn't considered to be a serious condition. It wasn't called "post-traumatic stress disorder" until the Vietnam war, when it was finally seen as a major health problem.
exactly this. It was sugar coated and glossed over much more easily back then.
Perfectly said! I don't feel a need to make a separate answer myself now.
It wasn't sugar coated. Remember, Psychology is a rather new discipline and didn't fully understand the trauma of combat for decades.Check out the movie Captain Newman,MD(1963), it pre-dates Vietnam and there is no sugar.
You have misstated casualties rates. http://www.pbs.org/greatwar/resources/casdeath_pop.html
