The Panic of Coronavirus

Just a few hours ago, New Jersey went into a state of emergency because of the coronavirus. A lot of New Jersey schools are closing now as a result or extending the Spring Break time to the students that are currently there.

Many people are thinking that this is the result of hysteria while others say it is absolutely necessary to protect ourselves and limit the exposure to it.

Thoughts on this? Should New Jersey allow universities to close because of a virus that has only affected a handful of people?

I think that America is a bit of an outlier, as most western countries are, as far as actually needing to shut things down. It isn't necessary, but even businesses here in California are buying up tech like crazy so their workers can work from home rather than come in during this pandemic. I feel like this is happening in order to avoid a long-term shut down of crucial infrastructure when people are getting sick in larger numbers, rather than it being the current narrative of strictly "avoiding the virus altogether." I mean look at China, factories shutting down dealing a huge blow to their markets temporarily, it's just reactive thinking at its finest.

Should they allow universities to close? If they want to allow them, it is their right to do so, if they want to force them to close then I'd say it depends on the amount of students who want to continue in the face of the virus.

Overall, I feel like there is some weird conspiracy theory brewing behind this whole pandemic, and I'm going to keep going about my day as normal until I get infected. When I get infected I'm going to go about my day as normal but with the virus and maybe drop down to some lighter activity and up my zinc and vitamin c intake. Also comfort my son and girlfriend as they will most likely also get sick.

Seems like another smelly fart on the wind from mass media perturbing everyone temporarily, and it was really blown out of proportion due to factories we import from closing down.

I live in the one of the most (if not the most) affected area in the country.  We don't have a "handful" of cases, we now have hundreds. Nor is it a media conspiracy.

254 cases in the state. King County alone has 174, that will probably top 200 by Thursday.  22 deaths total.  Today, we found out that JBLM might have a case as well.  Boeing has one.  So it's not all elderly.  Emergency Services are being affected too; 31 firefighters and 3 police officers are now in quarantine.

Trump's former Homeland Security Sec said that hospitals could be overwhelmed within 2 weeks.  Let's hope he's wrong.

We're seeing this up close.  Get prepared.  This is real.

It's good to see you back in here, Lions.

As a former King County resident, I get the worry. It all comes down to how much and how quickly this country takes action against the problem.

If we are aggressive like China, South Korea and Italy, we will do OK. If we wait too long to act, we're going to have a big problem.

Thanks, Promisem.  Not much time these days, just getting a hub done takes a heck of lot of time.

King Cty probably has twice the pop density since you lived here. Spreading out so fast.  But the pols are acting responsibly in every county & that's what matters.  Great EMS and hospitals too.

Since I last posted, the death toll is now at 25.  Everyone, stay safe.

In this case I do not know what to believe, then, because all the news sources say different things. One place says it's no big deal, the next says it's a huge deal, one person says one thing and the next another. According to the science of it the reason so many people have died from it is due to a weakened state of their immune system in most cases, and it is spreading so fast due to the lack of a vaccine. I still can't see this being the huge deal that it is being made out to be outside of it being a serious threat to infrastructure when everyone stays home sick.

Honestly, I wasn't giving much thought to the Coronavirus at all till yesterday, when my employer suddenly sent out a company wide e-mail to tell us that someone who works in our building has a family member who is displaying "flu-like symptoms."
As a precaution, we were immediately sent home and told to work from home via remote login until further notice. I presume they're going to disinfect the entire place in the interim.

In other words... s**t just got real, y'all!

I think it is worth reporting the recovery rate from the coronavirus is 94 percent.  If someone contacts it, it's not an automatic death sentence.  It is a reason to be concerned but it is not time to panic.

"As cases of the new coronavirus continue to climb, so have instances of recovery, and a tracker maintained by Johns Hopkins University reported that more than 50,000 people have recovered.

More than 94,000 people have become infected with the coronavirus, which causes the disease COVID-19, since it was first identified in December. With the increased spread, case counts and deaths, public concern has driven people to hoard supplies. But health officials maintain that the threat of contracting the virus and the chances of coming down with the disease remain low for the average person.

As of Wednesday morning, the Johns Hopkins tracker showed 94,225 cases of the virus in 73 countries. Of those cases, 51,026 people recovered from the virus, including 49,856 in mainland China.

Outside of China, where the virus originated and has taken the biggest toll, large outbreaks have been seen in Italy and Iran. The outbreaks prompted the World Health Organization (WHO) to send experts into the infected areas, and on Saturday, Vice President Mike Pence announced that, in light of the outbreaks, the U.S. was barring foreign nationals from entering America if they have visited Iran within 14 days.

In Iran, there have been 2,922 confirmed cases and 92 deaths, while 552 people have recovered.

The U.S. also increased travel warnings to a Level 4 advisory (meaning do not travel) for the Italian regions of Lombardy and Veneto because of the outbreak. The rest of the country was under a Level 3 advisory, meaning Americans should reconsider travel, and of the 2,502 cases in Italy, 79 people have died and 160 have recovered.'

First confirmed case of C-19 in my town was announced today.
Obviously no names were named, but rumor mill has it that the person worked in the high school cafeteria.
