Democratic Gov. Gavin Newsom of California warned Monday that President Biden's plan to reverse former President Donald Trump's border policies could "break" his state.
The Biden administration is planning to lift the Trump-era Title 42 policy, which allows police and border officers to expedite the expulsion of illegal immigrants.
Newsom, speaking to ABC News on Monday, said, "The fact is, what we’ve got right now is not working and is about to break in a post-42 world unless we take some responsibility and ownership."
"I'm saying that as a father," the governor added. "I'm saying that as someone that feels responsible for being part of the solution and I'm trying to do my best here."
Newsom claimed the U.S. government is sending "more and more" migrants to California because the state is "taking care of folks."
"The more we do, the burden is placed disproportionate on us," he said.
"We're already at capacity at nine of our sites," Newsom continued. "We can't continue to fund all of these sites because of the budgetary pressures now being placed on this state and the offsetting issues that I have to address.… The reality is, unless we're doing what we're doing, people will end up on the streets."
Newsom's comments come as a surprise after years of championing policies to accommodate and expand protections to illegal migrants entering California.
About 22% of California's nearly 11 million immigrants are in the United States illegally, according to the Public Policy Institute of California.
In September, Newsom signed a bill allowing illegal immigrants to obtain state ID, saying, "We’re a state of refuge – a majority-minority state, where 27% of us are immigrants."
In January, Newsom unveiled his 2022-23 California budget plan, which included universal health care benefits for all low-income residents, including illegal migrants.
The Biden administration is requesting billions in additional funding for the border as it predicts an enormous spike in migrant encounters when the Title 42 authority to quickly expel migrants due to the COVID-19 pandemic ends later this month.
A court ordered the administration to stop using the authority – which has been used since March 2020 to quickly return migrants to Mexico – after finding it to be unlawful."

Or could he be making his first attempt to blast Joe, because he may run in 2024?
Oh My, politicians are so transparent these days...
I pretty much feel I have my finger on what most users here feel about the social acceptance of the on-slot of migrants. the "we so need them, and all that... I have kept a few of these questions very direct. I hope this thread does not turn into a Trump did this, or Obama tried this. Hopefully, we can consider the here, and now.
So, what do you think, are the borders wide open?
Do you feel many states will feel the financial burden, due to the great number of immigrants that Newsome claims Califonia is feeling?
Do you think Newsome will run in 2024?
So Newsom, now you're worried about to many illegal aliens crossing the border into California (aka) North Mexico. Screw you and your liberal state. Suck it up you POS.
I say go, Mr Newsom. He is more doctrinaire about his Democrat Party values and record over Biden who is far too moderate for my tastes.
What an absolute shock to find out that illegal aliens cannot support themselves, and require our pocketbook to survive! (Sarcasm if you didn't catch it). Only California could take decades to figure that out.
But Biden is asking for billions more for the border? No he's not; he's asking for billions more to support millions more illegals entering our country. Not for the border.
The only question is are we smart enough to figure that out, given the experience of southern states, or must we go broke before we "get" it?
You got that right.
"Biden administration approves Washington state request to offer health insurance to undocumented immigrants
The Biden administration has approved an application by Washington state to expand health insurance access for all residents regardless of immigration status by allowing it to forgo requirements set by the Affordable Care Act (ACA).
The Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) and the Treasury Department approved Washington’s application for a State Innovation Waiver, issued under Section 1332 of the ACA. The application for this waiver was submitted in May.
What is a 1332 waiver?
A state may apply for a 1332 request if it wishes to pursue “innovative strategies” for providing affordable health care while still retaining protections offered through the ACA.
The HHS secretary may approve a 1332 waiver request if they determine that the proposed plan will provide coverage that is at least as comprehensive as coverage provided without the waiver, which the Washington state plan was found to do.
The Evergreen State’s exception
Washington state specifically sought to be granted an exception from a part of the ACA that excluded people living in the U.S. illegally from being eligible for qualified health plans, which are plans certified by the federal government that meet requirements set by the ACA.
According to the two departments, this waiver will expand access to qualified health plans, stand-alone qualified dental plans and a state affordability program to Washington residents regardless of their immigration status.
“The waiver will help Washington work towards its goals of improving health equity and reducing racial disparities by expanding access to coverage for the uninsured population through the state Exchange, all the while not increasing costs for those currently enrolled,” the departments said in a statement.
The approval of this waiver is contingent on the state accepting specific terms and conditions. If these requirements are agreed on, then the waiver will go into effect from the beginning of 2024 to the end of 2028.
While the newly approved waiver will not go into effect next year, the White House noted in its approval that Washington state had allocated fiscal 2023 funds for a state subsidy program called Cascade Care Savings. The program offers premium subsidies to residents who get plans through Washington Healthplanfinder and make up to 250 percent of the federal poverty level.

I read that he wants the money to make immigration more efficient, due to problems of processing and he has run out of visibility to house those that need holding, and transpertation... Now, this sounds like the Target hiring more help to make our shopping more pleasurable. He asked Congress for an additional 3 billion.
Not sure if he knows it, but we are or were a sovereign nation. We can totally decide to close the borders until further notice, due to this crisis. Simply tell migrants to head for another country if they need asylum.
He had a ton of cash in his last bill for the border. But he wants more.
So hard to fathom Americans sitting back and putting up with this problem.
It has become so expensive, and dangerous, and I wish more would realize the number of people who are being killed by the increased cheaper drugs that are coming across that border. Seems like This administration could care less about the crisis at the border.
"He had a ton of cash in his last bill for the border. But he wants more."
And did he spend that money on the border or did he give it to illegals by way of supporting them? If it was to secure the border, what do we have to show for it? Certainly not more wall, but instead more illegals. Biden is simply not concerned with stopping the flood - to the contrary he continues to encourage more of the same. Ending title 42 is just the latest step in that endeavor.
I totally agree. But why? Can you figure out why this bunch wants all these migrants coming in? I can't even imagine why the Democrats want all these poor people to move to America.
Even if President Biden wanted to continue title 42 it appears that judges were going to block it and have blocked it? Doesn't seem that it was meant to go on forever and wouldn't have been allowed to have gone on forever. Truth is Congress just has to deal with the issue now. No more excuses. I think it's most likely the best thing that judges have said title 42 cannot continue.
I rather think you're right - it might be a good thing to end the farce. As Sharlee points out, it was never anything but a political ploy to address a massive problem that Congress refuses to consider. It is my opinion (separate from the Trump haters that will vilify every move Trump ever made) that Trump used it in the hopes of forcing Congress to perform their duties, just as he did with that awful separation of families as parents were "jailed" without their children.
But I don't hold much hope that Congress will act, and when they do not we will see a crises the likes of which has never been seen before in the world. These are sad times, and the US is viewed as the solution to all problems; couple that with a welcome mat and no objections as the millions we see now will become 10X as many.
The president has the power to send the military to the border to handle what we know will happen with this slot of migrants trying to come in next week. He can as I said close our borders to immigrants due to long surpassing this year's quota. We do have quotas believe it or not.
This upcoming mess at the border is being ignored, as Biden ignores everything. I am also sure this nut job will go off on his Holiday, and be oblivious to what is happening at the border.
He needs to be impeached... Plain and simple he can not, and never could do the job.
Today he is worried about speed limits on boats! He is nuts!
"We do have quotas believe it or not."
I don't believe you. While WE, and Congress and the country, may have quotas, Biden does not. His only number is "as high as I can get it".
I many times have posted the quotas. This falls on deaf ears.
Yes, it is more than apparent Biden is trying to cram as many migrants in as humanly possible, and the Democratic House is letting him. The fact is Pelosi can put forth actions to stop this slot, but she has not put any meaningful on the table, except her wish to have better, quicker more efficient processing at the border, more humane processing.
Anyone who can't;t see the Democrats want this onslaught at the border to continue as long as possible is blind. Yes, some speak about the fact we need the two parties to work together, which is fine. But we need a speaker to step up with some solutions to what she has ignored for over a year now. This is her job. Not sure why the blame is not being dumped where it should be being dumped. If the president won't acknowledge such a problem it is up to Congress to protect our laws.
Gosh, so many are dancing around the ugly problem, and the simple start to a solution to what will occur next week when 42 ends. Sorry to say we look so dam stupid as a Nation. It must be comical for other Nations to watch.
Just close the border, we are a sovereign nation, and we can close the border to asylum seekers while in crisis. So very simple it would bite one in the ass!
Simply tell migrants to head for another country if they need asylum.
Hmm. Since evangelicals seem to drive much of Republican policy these days, what would Jesus do on this one? We have a whole lot of objection based on religious beliefs these days. Does the square with those Christian values? Or is this a convenient time to set those aside? I don't like the waffling. If Republicans want to apply the logic to one issue then it stands it must be applicable to another. I can find a multitude of biblical scripture that points to helping these immigrants. Are we casting that aside now?
This is a full-blown crisis... I made no mention of religion. In my view, it plays no part in this form of crisis. 42 was a bandaid Trump initiated due to COVID. Biden's open border wink-wink policy is what started extenuating the mess at the border. Biden has had ample time to come up with a solution to curb what we are seeing. He is a man that does not solve problems but creates them, IMO.
People act shocked at the numbers, this has been going on from pretty much Biden's first days in office. To add up to the tune of over 5 million migrants now in our Country, and what is being reported at least another million got away. Nacey has not handled this situation in any respect. It's her job to see the right bills presented to Congress. She has ignored our border problems.
Biden gave little respect to title 42, the border patrol reports a very high percentage of migrants are let in without even being completely vetted.
I really can't understand how any free-thinking person can no see we have a horrible problem and a president that has done nothing to even curb the influx of migrants. Nothing to deter people from presenting themselves at our border.
Biden visited Arizona on Tuesday but did not visit the U.S.-Mexico border. He visited the state to tour a Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. facility in the process of being constructed in Phoenix, Arizona.
When a reporter asked Biden why he would come to Arizona and not visit the border, the president said "visiting the border is not a priority".
"Because there are more important things going on,” Biden said. “They're gonna invest billions of dollars in a new enterprise.” Joe Biden
In my view, this man has poor judgment in regard to prioritizing and did from day one. He needs to be impeached for the clear lack of not being able to do the job of president. The country has floundered under this man.
Rather like Democrats screaming that they are "sanctuary (cities, states, etc.)" offering aid to illegals...and then screaming that it isn't fair to relocate them to their city/state, right? NIMBY is alive and well in the Democrat psyche, doubly so when it affects their pocketbook. One has only to look at California today or Martha's Vineyard just a few days ago to see it in plain, obvious action.
Logic would dictate that illegals were welcomed with open arms, right? Just as it would dictate that your interpretation of the bible is something all Republicans should agree with and make a part of their life.
I would like to see religious doctrine, when anyone invokes it, to be used consistently. I'm growing tired of religion being used to prop up division and hate. They dig through the Bible finding scripture they think supports their view but miss the entire Spirit of the book. Is It ultimately Christian to turn our backs on people in need? Did Jesus preach about shunning gay people.? The religious arguments and the hypocrisy are just pretty overwhelming. My God is nowhere near as hateful , judgemental and vengeful as many of these so-called Christians out here.
I don't know maybe I'm wrong maybe these Christians do want us to turn our back on all these people. All I know is that their Jesus or my God would never preach such a thing.
"My God is nowhere near as hateful , judgemental and vengeful as many of these so-called Christians out here."
And there you nailed it with but a single word. "My".
Speaking from years of experience, there are not two people in the world that will agree on the meaning of biblical scripture; every person makes up their own meaning for the words printed in the bible. And you do not get the final word, you do not get to dictate to anyone else what the bible means, what God of Jesus meant or what their message was.
Just as I don't get to ask the governor of California, now whining that California cannot afford the waves of illegal aliens they have invited in, why he has changed his mind. Or why he doesn't just shuttle them to Sacramento or some other so-called sanctuary city.
Not sure where you feel I as an individual feel religion enters in our border being overrun. I am pro-law and expect our Government to make laws and enforce those laws. I note you just can't bring yourself to discuss the problem at hand. In this case the border crisis. Your point is well taken but has nothing to do with the subject of the thread.
You are side-stepping the issue, the border crisis.
I've definitely made my view on the problem at hand clear. Our elected officials on both sides of the fence need to get to work asap. It's really very simple. Voters need to hold them accountable instead of buying into the partisan BS all the time. People would rather take the righteous attitude that their side is "right" Well I hope folks are happy sitting basking in their righteousness while the border problems aren't addressed. Any real issue in this country will only be resolved in any meaningful way when parties work together. There's just no way around that. Like it or not it can't be a" my way or the highway type of attitude.". A lot of compromises are going to need to be made. I don't see many in Congress at all willing to step up and do the work.
The religious aspect just entered my mind because so often we hear far right conservatives talk about how their religious sensibilities are being assaulted. It's just interesting that they don't apply the same religious principles to all issues.
Well said. We have a major problem in our legislature, our two party system and the intense partisanship both that legislature and the people in the street espouse.
There are few people, and fewer legislators, willing to take the stand you have taken here; that compromise is necessary in a democratic country.
Your deflect makes good sense. But no cigar. It is a clear fact the Dems have the house, at any point Peposi could introduce measures to help with this border crisis. I get a lick out of how many feel this problem just occurred.... It did not it has been going on for a very; long time. So yes, your comment is very much common sense and sounds very logical.
It is up to Congress to handle problems in a timely wise fashion. This House should have stepped up long ago, and presented even some bandaids -- This Democratic House factually did not --- they have a big problem coming next week, and have ignored it. This is the ugly fact we need to face right now.
So, yes dancing around a subject can be entertaining --- look here, not there...
What has the Democratic congress done about the pending next week's mess that we are facing?
The reality is we have a congress, I blame the current House majority for not using that majority to prevent an oncoming problem they have ignored for many months now.
I don't want to hear, well the Senate would shoot a bandaid down. Yes, they might, and that would show the American public more than they wanted to know about our do-nothing congress.
Just as I have suspected, looks like bills have been put forward and have gone to die..
https://www.congress.gov/search?q=%7B%2 … tion%22%7D
Again I would say they should get busy and start fashioning something out of all that's been put forward. Doesn't seem that difficult. Anything that requires true bipartisanship and actual effort doesn't seem to get done. Give it a day or a week and we'll have another culture war to set people's hair on fire.
next thing biden will want to do is give illegal aliens the White House. That'll really put the smile on all those illegal aliens faces.
It is very obvious that the White House has these illegal's backs. For what reason, who knows?
Maybe after last weeks fiasco with the Saudis he is trying to abandon his MCGA (China First) policy and has decided to work in favor of the immigrants.
It certainly appears and has from day one, Biden hopes to overflow America with illegal migrants. The big question is why? What do the Democrats plan to do with all these migrants? He does not care about the fact many terrorists have been found trying to get in, many criminals, and tons of Drugs. It just makes one curious as to why he is ignoring the border and leaving it wide open to all.
Maybe he should be asking Congress to put their heads together and come up with some much-needed immigration reform. I don't think title 42 was meant to be an immigration policy. It was an emergency measure only. Now Congress needs to set aside their partisan BS and come up with something that addresses the issue.
It is evident that for decades we have had the need for new immigration laws. Regarding title 42, it was a bandaid Trump came up with along with the wait in Mexico to slow or make it less desirable to make the trip to our borders. It was helping to curb the number presented at the borders. It was as a say a bandaid.
Biden gave out several dog whistles to migrants to make the trip. And then the word traveled throughout the world --- Biden is just letting almost anyone that shows up into the country. Yes, 42 was still helping somewhat to turn some away. However, the 5 million that got a pass sent a further message to those that wanted to come, and perhaps be one of the lucky ones that were admitted.
We have many that have waited in Mexico and will come across once 42 is no longer in play. We need this congress to do their job -- they know dam well what has happened and what will happen next week.
For reasons unknown, they are sitting on their hands doing nothing. Common sense tells me, for some reason the Democrats are very satisfied with the huge increase of migrants pouring in. We are a sovereign nation and have the right to pass an emergency ruling to close the border to asylum due to this pending crisis.
This House is doing nothing that is one fact that stands out clearly on all of this. We have a huge crisis and a Government that has sat back and not only provoke this situation, but has condoned, and ignored it. Mine you the House is a majority of Democrats --- What have they suggested? What bills have they offered on immigration reform that was sensible and would stop what we are seeing?
President Biden offered an immigration plan on day one. Even if it was the worst thing ever put forward, it was a place to start. It was an opportunity for both parties to come together and fashion something that makes sense. Since that time I don't think there has been any movement at all. Even with Democrats having a current majority in the house they would not overcome the filibuster in the Senate. So where are we then? It's the same old partisan BS that gets nothing done.
A federal judge in November blocked the federal government from continuing to use Title 42 to immediately expel migrants at the southern border after they have entered the United States.
Judge Emmet Sullivan of the U.S. District Court in Washington, D.C., ruled that the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s use of Title 42 to prevent people from accessing the asylum process is “arbitrary and capricious” and a violation of the law because it was not implemented properly.
“It is unreasonable for the CDC to assume that it can ignore the consequences of any actions it chooses to take in the pursuit of fulfilling its goals, particularly when those actions included the extraordinary decision to suspend the codified procedural and substantive rights of noncitizens seeking safe harbor,” Sullivan wrote in his opinion.
So what do I think? Congress, get to work. Stop politicizing the issue and draft some immigration reform ASAP.
